Eiji Aonuma has been a longtime worker on the Zelda series for Nintendo producing and directing many successful titles within a span of 15 years. In an interview with Edge magazine, Mr. Aonuma has discussed his interest in turning away from Link’s Hyrulean adventures and focusing on working on a new title. He admits, however, that every time he comes up with some exciting new elements they end up being utilized for another Zelda title causing him to focus on the series.

Mr. Aonuma also hinted at when he may retire from working with Nintendo! You can find out all the details about his thoughts on switching his focus and when he may retire after the jump!

Here is what Mr. Aonuma had to say about working on different games and retiring:

“I’m 50 now, so I only have about ten more years to make games at Nintendo. I want to try all sorts of new things before it’s too late — I don’t want to get to the end of my career and only have worked on Zelda. But every time I come up with some good new ideas, they end up being used in a Zelda game! I need a six-month break to get away from the Zelda cycle and focus on something new [laughs]. But I’d probably end up making a game that is similar to Zelda; after all, A Link to the Past was my biggest influence.”

It probably seems like a good idea for Mr. Aonuma to try different avenues in the gaming industry. Maybe he could work on a new IP which may be similar to the Zelda series yet provide its own elements and ideas which Mr. Aonuma seems to be hinting at. It’s great to know, however, that he still has around ten more years in him to influence Nintendo games and provide the company with knowledge, experience, and wisdom.
