Dr. Link: Diagnosis of Characters #2

drlinkLast week we had a look at an interesting character, Guru Guru, who was diagnosed with multiple disorders. This week we have another character who is just as, if not more interesting. This character is not as well known as Guru Guru and doesn’t make as many appearances, but they are interesting none the less. This character obsesses over small insects and bases their entire life after them. Hit the jump to see the next patient!

Welcome to the office of Dr. Link, the digital doctor of mental and psychological disorders for characters in the Zelda series. Today we have our second patient, Agitha, who is not quite right in the head. Agitha is the young, energetic girl who can be found in her house in Castle Town in Twilight Princess. She is always happy, but she lives in a “castle” and collects bugs for a hobby. Actually, she obsesses over bugs and has based her life around them. She is bugging Link constantly to find and catch gold bugs for her, while she sits and “listens” to the bugs.

agithaPatient Name: Agitha
Residence: Castle Town (Twilight Princess)
Symptoms: Agitha has an unnatural obsession with insects and bases her life on these creatures. She is always asking Link to find these bugs for her and that is all she can talk about. She also has based her life off of her obsession. She lives in a “castle” that is completely decorated with pictures and paintings of bugs. And she has built it in such a way that bugs can survive in her home. Not only does her home reflect her love for insects, but also the way she dresses, wearing a butterfly dress and butterfly wings. She collects all kinds of bugs and she keeps them and never gets rid of them.

Agitha is somewhat of an outcast and she only occasionally leaves her home. However, when she does leave her home, she is out looking for more bugs to add to her collection. She prefers to be left alone so she can focus on what she finds important in life. She would rather spend time with her insect friends than with real people.

She has hallucinations that the bugs are communicating with her. She says that she can hear the bugs talking and whispering to her, and she believes that she can communicate with them. This is not a one time occurrence, however, she says that she can hear the bugs talking every time you confront her.

Diagnosis:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: In this case her OCD shows through by her constant need to keep every bug she ever finds and base her life off of it. This sub-category of OCD that she presents is obsessive hoarding. She cannot and will not let go of any of her precious insects.
  • Schizophrenia: a mental disorder that can cause delusions, hallucinations, disorganized behavior, and social withdrawal. A perfect explanation for her case of hearing the bugs talk and believing that the bugs absolutely love and communicate with her. Schizophrenia also contributes to her social issues where she never talks to people because she feels more comfortable with her bugs. Her case of schizophrenia is severe and has taken over her life.
