I personally haven’t begun a complete replay of Breath of the Wild, but there are some projects so inspiring that I’ve started to think enough time has passed that perhaps I’m finally ready to start that new save file. Nearly seven years after the release of the game, and almost two years after beginning his project, Zelda fan and Minecraft creator Grazzy is now only a few major regions away from completing his monumental goal: building the entire Breath of the Wild map in Minecraft.

While certainly not the first Breath of the Wild map project built in Minecraft, Grazzy’s build is massively impressive, both in its scale and attention to detail. In March of 2022, Grazzy embarked on a herculean journey with his first installment of what would become his video series “Breath of the Wild in Minecraft.” I can’t even imagine how much time it would have taken to build Hyrule from scratch, but thankfully Grazzy used the map generator tool WorldPainter, which allowed him to turn a flat topographic map into a fleshed-out render of the game’s base landscape in Minecraft. In addition, Grazzy’s first video covers the Great Plateau, with in-depth builds of Guardians, Shrines, Sheikah Towers, the Shrine of Resurrection, and the Temple of Time.

Grazzy’s second project video released in August 2022 covers having to rebuild the map after noticing the scale was too small, and then building the Kakariko and Hateno village regions, while the third installment released three months later fills out the Lanaryu region with Zora’s Domain, Mount Lanayru, and the Lanayru Wetlands. In February of last year, Grezzy returned with a breakdown of his work in the Faron Region, which includes builds of Lake Floria, Lurelin Village, and Eventide Island. Right before the release of Tears of the Kingdom, the series’ fifth installment brought us builds from the Gerudo region, including Gerudo Town, the Seven Heroines structures, the Yiga Hideout, and even Molduga! Finally (for now), in November Grazzy shared the construction of the Tabantha Region, complete with Satori Mountain, Hyrule Ridgeland, Thundra Plateau, the Forgotten Temple, and Rito Village.

Grazzy knew it’s dangerous to go alone, so he made sure to recruit some help along the way:

  • Howzieky – Created a datapack for the map and particle improvements
  • Etzeo – Assisted with: Zora’s Domain, waterfalls, terraforming, and Mount Lanayru Tower details; Deya Village Ruins and areas of Faron; Vah Naboris and Lake Hylia islands; Tabantha Great Bridge, Vah Medoh, the Forgotten Temple, Dinraal, and more
  • Ghostly – Assisted with: main Zora dam and terraforming; terraforming around the Gerudo Region, Satori Mountain, and more
  • Ombreins – Assisted with: Vah Ruta, Mount Lanayru Tower, Zora’s Domain, and many more details; the Faron cliff palette and enemy camp skull; Colosseum Ruins, Gerudo Town, Yiga Hideout, Vah Naboris, and Gerudo Vai skin; Satori Mountain, Vah Medoh, Thundra Plateau, and other areas of Hyrule Ridgeland
  • Hirath – Built Cursed Naydra; assisted with Farosh and Vah Naboris
  • SlyJCoolAssisted with: ridge near Zonai Ruins; various Gerudo ruins, Gerudo Town, Yiga Hideout, and the Gerudo Tower
  • TobyToast– Assisted with: Lurelin Village, Eventide Island, Faron terraforming, and more; Kara Kara Bazaar and terraforming in the Gerudo Region; Tanagar Canyon, the Forgotten Temple, Vah Medoh, Rito Village, and more
  • Goat – Assisted with: Lurelin Village, Farosh, Bridge of Hylia, and more; Gerudo Great Skeleton, Gerudo Town, Yiga Hideout, Vah Naboris, Colosseum Ruins, and more; the Forgotten Temple, Vah Medoh, Rito Village, and more
  • Alphie – Provided terraforming assistance across the map
  • Saeraphinx – Assisted with the Spring of Courage dragon head and provided fun plugins and commands for the group
  • Shovel – Assisted with Dinraal

Now all that’s left to do before the project is complete is the Akkala and Eldin Regions (which he intends to combine into one video), and Central Hyrule, with Hyrule Castle as the final build of the map. You may be wondering: does Grazzy plan on tackling the Tears of the Kingdom map next? As it turns out, he’s already started, taking a break during the Breath of the Wild map project to build the sequel’s Great Sky Island! Grazzy intends to add all the new elements from Tears of the Kingdom after he completes the Breath of the Wild in Minecraft project. After watching all these videos and hearing about the trials and tribulations of taking on such a daunting challenge, I have so much respect for Grazzy, and hope to see both maps finished one day.

Grazzy identifies himself simply as “the guy building Breath of the Wild in Minecraft.” Before beginning this project, he regularly uploaded adventures in Minecraft hardcore mode and other collaborations with the Boxscape group. Grazzy has also built Skyward Sword‘s Skyloft in Minecraft. If you’d like to keep up with Grazzy as he finishes this incredible years-long endeavor, you can follow him on YouTube, X, and TikTok. If you really like what he does and would like to join his Discord community, you can do so here.
