In a recent interview over at Inc Gamers, Darksiders II game director Marvin Donald spoke about the development of the game, some of the new features, as well as the comparisons to the Legend of Zelda series. The Zelda and Darksiders comparisons have been there ever since before the first Darksiders ever released and there is a lot of validity to them. There are a lot of similar aspects in the two franchises. Personally, if I was making a game and it was even mentioned in the same sentence as Zelda, that would be one of the biggest compliments that anybody could give me. Go ahead and make the jump to see what the Darksiders director had to say about the Zelda series.

Inc Gamers: What did you guys make of the Zelda comparisons that various people made to the first Darksiders?

Marvin Donald: We’re honoured by it, we’re huge fans of Zelda. Those game are definitely an inspiration for the kind of work that we do. We like their style of dungeons, puzzle solving and general pacing and we think [the comparison] is a very positive thing.

Zelda is a franchise that has been around forever and has done a lot to define what modern gaming is; there are elements that connect all of the Zelda together and make that franchise so successful. Basically, we want to make the kinds of games that we like playing ourselves.

I’m a huge Zelda and Darksiders fan, so it brings a smile to my face to see these types of kind words said about the Zelda series. Having had a chance to play the demo of Darksiders II a few weeks back, I can say that the Zelda comparisons are certainly there this time around as well, perhaps even more so. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s not a Zelda clone by any means, as Darksiders does a heck of a lot of very unique things that aren’t part of the Zelda world.
