Daily Debate: Which Dungeon Boss from a 3D Zelda Game Would You Most Want to See in a 2D Game?

Among the myriad highlights of last week’s Echoes of Wisdom trailer, one reveal in particular stood out to me. Near the end of the trailer, we were shown a brief glimpse of a dragon that looked virtually identical to Ocarina of Time’s Volvagia.
Now, I don’t want to read too deeply into the implications of his supposed return. With the rise of multiverse-centric stories in today’s popular media, it’s tempting to theorize that this game’s mysterious Rifts might be connected to the greater Zelda timeline. Essentially, in this hypothetical scenario, we’d be looking at a premise similar to that of the original Hyrule Warriors. For now, though, it’s safest to assume that Volvagia was brought back simply because he’s an iconic boss from one of the series’ most popular games.
Even so, his very presence is enough to get me thinking about a separate, larger topic: which other dungeon bosses from throughout Link’s 3D adventures would translate well to 2D? Immediately, my mind goes to what is perhaps my favorite, non-final boss in the series: Stallord from Twilight Princess.
Certainly, there’s such a degree of scale and verticality to at least the second half of that fight that Stallord would likely need to be retooled significantly for a top-down game. Personally, I’m A-OK with an entirely different style of boss fight, as his character design alone is just so striking. It’d just be great to see the old fossil again, you know?
I would love to hear your thoughts, though. Which boss from a 3D Zelda game would you most like to see brought to the second dimension? Let us know in the comments below!
