Recently, we ran a series highlighting some of the personal pets and animal companions of our staff here at Zelda Dungeon (Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3). Our furry (and sometimes not-so-furry) friends remind us of the bond that can transcend species and experienced worlds, finding common ground in the concept of love and all our shared quirks.

These collections of companions got me wondering if we could build a similar bridge with the monsters and enemies we so often find ourselves against in the Legend of Zelda series. Some of these feisty foes show potential for a softer side;  I think of Bokoblins and the small communities they create together in the “Wild era” games as an example. I went through Zelda Dungeon’s List of Enemies and found a few fiends that I think would make great companions:

1. GoriyaThese might be banned in certain states or provinces to keep as pets due to their recklessness and range, but they just look so, so fuzzy. I could see myself telling people on social media that Goriyas are just misunderstood, and make the best pets.

2. DodongoThe kind of pet I would love when it was a small baby, only to realize it still considers itself a lap-lizard when fully grown and weighing several tons (or several thousand tons, depending on your source). But, the way they slowly slouch around, coupled with the sound they make when they’re about to set half my living room on fire, makes it hard to be mad.

3. Miniblin: Having already almost half a dozen cats, I feel like I already have experienced what it would be like to have a couple of these little demons turning my house upside down. I’d just have too much fun coming up with names for them, and it would make up for the laziness I’ve shown in my real life by naming the majority of my cats after the colors that adorn them.

What do you think of my list? What animal-like adversary in Zelda would you consider a good potential companion? Let us know in the comments!
