Daily Debate: What Zelda Game Has the Most Believable Relationships?
Posted on January 15 2020 by Alexandria Weber
A large part of Link’s namesake is not only to connect a player to the world of Hyrule, but also to bring people together in the game itself. This linkage, if you will, has resulted in many different characters over the past 34 years, and in turn, many different relationships.
The Zelda franchise has been meeting high standards as far as gameplay and visuals for so long that it comes into question not only which game does it best, but also which games excel in other ways. When it comes to characters and how they interact, a large part of immersion in any media is in its believability. Whether it’s the character’s facial expressions, what they say, or how well the interaction fits within the story, there is no doubt that the series has some truly meaningful relationships.
Personally, I feel that Skyward Sword does this best. It establishes a significant motivation for Link to save Zelda and does not shy away from the characters being rather expressive, including the grandiose villain Ghirahim. The game also uses Link, Zelda, and Impa to complete Groose’s arc, the knight-in-training going from a pompous bully to a humble asset. But perhaps you think otherwise, considering Link and Aryll’s sibling bond in The Wind Waker, or the unity of the champions in Breath of the Wild.
So, what do you think? Is there a game that stands apart as far as how characters relate to each other? Let us know in the comments below!
