Daily Debate: What Would You Want the Switch Successor to Be Called Instead of “Switch 2?”
Posted on February 04 2025 by Kora Burton

Ever since Nintendo announced last year that their next home console was in development, fans and theorists online have been avidly discussing the possibilities, often using the stand-in moniker “Switch 2” when referencing the forthcoming system. For about a year, at Zelda Dungeon we’ve tried our best to stick to using the term “Switch successor,” because no one knew for sure what the next system would be called, and many of us were hoping for something… well, different.
As we all have learned, however, the Switch successor has indeed officially been dubbed the “Switch 2” by Nintendo. Reactions around here were mixed, primarily ranging from ambivalence to disappointment. Some felt that Nintendo really missed a golden opportunity to be creative with the new console’s name. Others felt the name was just plain dumb. I personally feel that “Switch 2” on the surface level seems kind of lazy, but at the same time, it tempers expectations and tells you that honestly, you should just expect what’s on the label: a Switch, but bigger, newer, and hopefully better.
That said, returning to more traditional Nintendo naming conventions, or leaning further into more recent company conventions for the next Switch console, could have helped generate a little more excitement and energy. Many of you weighed in with naming ideas during a similar debate written by our own Kristen G. Rosario last year, with the following just being a few — how about the “Super Nintendo Switch?” The “Switch Deluxe (DX)?” Maybe even a name that matches the successor’s changed Joy-Con attachment setup, like the “Nintendo Snap?”
How do you feel about Nintendo seeming to go with the popular but apparently unoriginal flow by naming their next system the “Switch 2?” Does it seem fitting given how little the system will ultimately have changed? Would you rather Nintendo had gone a different direction, perhaps taking one of the ideas listed here? Let us know your thoughts down below!
