Nintendo always decides to add more variety to each and every one of their consoles names. We started simple with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), then slapped the word “Super” on it for the console afterwards. But next thing you know, take a hard right and their third-generation console is called the Nintendo 64 (N64). it just continues from there with the likes of GameCube, Game Boy, Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and the most recent one, the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo recently confirmed that by the end of this fiscal year, we would be seeing the official reveal of the successor to the Switch. So, as we sit here deliberating with like-minded people about when it will be revealed, others are in the trenches and more concerned with the official name for the Big N’s next-generation system. Even all the writers here at Zelda Dungeon have small discussions once in a while, throwing out the most random of names you could call it.

I want to note that the name of a console is not the be-all, end-all one would think when purchasing a new system. There’s never been a next-generation console reveal where it was so universally hated just by what the company decided to name it. I bet there’s a handful of people out there who thought “Wii U” was just fine by them, but that’s only because it was going to be running games from their favorite franchises. The same goes for Microsoft and their use of the letter’s “X” and “S” for the current Xbox systems. Sony doesn’t have to worry about much either as they just slap another number on the side of the word “PlayStation.”

While at times Nintendo has been clever with their naming conventions (GameCube), others have not been so successful (Wii U). The question remains though, what would you name the Switch successor? For me, I think they’ll probably use one of their key terms they like using for their other projects and call it something like the “Super Nintendo Switch,” “New Nintendo Switch,” or even “Nintendo Switch DX.” Except for items that were just revised models of current systems, Nintendo has never used the number “2” for any of their next-generation consoles so I don’t think they’ll go the PlayStation route.

What would you name the Switch successor? Is there any name you hope it isn’t? Let us know in the comments below!
