Daily Debate: What Role Do You Want Princess Zelda To Have In Zelda U?
Posted on August 24 2014 by James Evans
When it comes to the Princess of Hyrule, nobody really knows what to expect. She’s been at every point of the spectrum when it comes to her role in the story: in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, she was put into an eternal sleep; she has been captured multiple times throughout the series; she has stood strong against great evil and even sacrificed herself for the Twilight Princess, Midna; in the new Hyrule Warriors she is even on the front lines of war as a playable character. Her importance is always great but her presence constantly waivers, which is what brings us to the topic of today’s Daily Debate. What role should Zelda have in the new Zelda U?
Honestly, when it comes to princesses, Zelda is about as unique as they come. She has been a pirate, a spirit, a warrior, and even a man…kind of. She has been helpless and she has been the sole reason for your survival. I can honestly say that I’m starting to understand why this is her “Legend”. But what can we expect from the next version of our beloved future Queen of Hyrule?
I personally would like to see her take more of an action role. I know that she is a princess and must be protected, but she has proven time and again that she is a princess who is willing to fight and die for her people. I would like to see her out of the castle. I want to see a threat so great that she has to take some matters into her own hands. I want to experience a grand adventure in which Link and Zelda’s paths cross ways on occasion and they must fight side by side.
However, there are some things I have considered that contradict what I want for Zelda’s future in the series. Zelda holds the Triforce of Wisdom. This is a large part of the reason why she often sits in the background, so to speak. She is constantly playing a game of chess, planning out the moves of everyone in advance and adapting accordingly to see the perfect ending, ultimately calling “checkmate” on evil. Her intelligence is what sets her apart as the princess who is capable of pulling her kingdom out of darkness. Link is the holder of the Triforce of Courage, allowing him to take on the adventure. Now it’s time for my counter argument.
While it is true that Link wields the Triforce of Courage, he is often challenged by puzzles that he must complete to prove his wisdom. He also must face off against Ganon himself in a test of combat, or power. Speaking of Ganon, who possesses the Triforce of Power, he often displays great feats of wisdom and courage by standing up against an entire nation and outsmarting their most intelligent thinkers to become King. So, if Link and Ganon can excel in all attributes of the Triforce, why can’t Zelda?
So now that I’ve rambled on defending why I think Zelda should be more involved in the next entry of the series, I want to hear what you think. What kind of role do you want Zelda to play in Zelda U? Do you want to see the strong warrior of Twilight Princess? Maybe you prefer the secret aid she provided as Sheik. Or are you the type of person who enjoys being the one true hero?
