Daily Debate: What Happens to a Fairy After it Heals Link?

Fairies have different roles in the Zelda series. Apart from Companion Fairies and Great Fairies, there are those that have healing powers and can restore Link to health, even when mortally wounded. From A Link to the Past forward, our hero has been able to bottle these handy fairies, which are so useful when Link finds himself in a tight spot!
When Link is in need, his bottled fairy will come to his aid. Then they’ll encircle him with it’s magic and disappear, but where do they go? In game, the fairy just seems to vanish into thin air. Could it be that with it’s job done, the fairy magically returns to its fountain? Or is it a bit grim in which they have given up their life force for Link and perished?
