Today Nintendo amazed us all with the announcement of two new packs of DLC for Mario Kart 8, which will consist sixteen new tracks based around various Nintendo games, and the inclusion of Link as a playable character. This marks the second times that Nintendo releases Zelda-themed DLC for their games, after the brilliant content for Sonic Lost World that came out a few months ago. Excited as we all are for the DLC, it does raise a very important question: should Zelda-themed DLC be released for other Nintendo games? Is mixing series really such a good idea?

Personally, I have some very mixed opinions about this. Don’t get me wrong, this announcement was probably some of the greatest news I’ve heard in months, with my undying love for Mario Kart 8 and obvious obsession with The Legend of Zelda, but I still believe that DLC based around The Legend of Zelda (and other series) might not be such a great idea going forward.

It works excellently with games like Mario Kart 8 and possibly Smash Bros., which are party games with a mixed bag of characters and worlds already, but seeing constant cameos from other games would not be a very good factor with games like Metroid or even The Legend of Zelda itself. In a game that takes itself and its story seriously, where the world matters and has to make canonical sense, the atmosphere would be ruined with a bunch of appearances from other Nintendo games. I would not enjoy seeing Toad running around Hyrule, or Link and Zelda appearing in a Star Fox game.

What do you think? Do you like the idea of the new Mario Kart DLC? If Nintendo did this again, what games do you think Link could make an appearance in?
