Daily Debate: Should Nintendo Create Another 2D Zelda Game?

In today’s gaming market, one can find a surplus of 3D console and handheld games with stunning visuals. On the flip-side, many developers are starting to create pixelated 2D games using new hardware that allows for more colors and faster movement. While the last few Zelda titles in the franchise have been 3D games, should Nintendo go ahead and revisit the good old 2D formula once again? Keep in mind I am not referring to A Link Between Worlds as a true 2D top down game, even if it used that gameplay style. This is mostly because first and foremost, it is literally in 3D. Beyond that, there is a mechanic in the game that brings you down to the worlds level, displaying a full 3D world. There is nothing wrong with this, but it’s not the same concept as the classics.
The last true 2D Zelda game Nintendo bestowed upon the community was the The Minish Cap. The Minish Cap made its way off of the shelf and into the gaming communities’ hearts, becoming a smashing success for the Gameboy Advance. Some fans are absolutely in love with 2D video games. Just look at the immense success of Shovel Knight, and all the buzz about its upcoming DLC expansion. If handled correctly, a 2D Zelda title could sell a few million copies rather quickly. Maybe it’s time to explore Hyrule in the second dimension once again!
Another note for 2D Zelda games is that it offers more tantalizing puzzle designs – even puzzles in many 3D titles are far more suited for 2D.
On the other hand, some fans would like Nintendo to concentrate all their developing power on the newest 3D Zelda games. With Nintendo’s recent announcement of the new NX hardware, the Zelda development team will be tossing around how it can be utilized for our favorite hero in green as soon as possible. Some of the community want eye-pleasing HD visuals, and not pixelated 2D graphics. Beyond that, some feel like they are more immersed in the world when it’s something they can actually imagine themselves being in by just looking at it. 3D Zelda games also often have deeper stories.
There is no right answer here, but still… what is your preference? Should Link return to being a 2D sprite once more? Share your thoughts below!
