The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is often considered a huge cultural touch stone for individuals who played Nintendo games in the 1990s and early 2000s. On a personal note, Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time. Even though other Zelda games have built more expansive worlds, I always feel a very deep connection to the characters and locations seen in the 1998 classic. Due to the game’s enduring popularity and iconic status within video games, fans and media often discuss the idea of a full remake or re-imagining of the game using current technology, though Nintendo has yet to fully take an advantage of the idea outside of the extremely faithful 3DS remake.
This incredible video by RwanLink shows us what a possible reimagining of the game could look like. This real time cinematic shows Link and Epona journeying through a wide array of gorgeous locations. While some locations seemed to be ripped straight from Ocarina of Time, other locations are reminiscent of places in Breath of the Wild (like the amazing shoreline scene). At the start of the video, RwanLink explains their goal was to “re-imagine the story that became a legend”. The creator also wanted to showcase what a modern HD game might look like or the design for a “spin-off film or television series.” According to the creator, this real time cinematic is the product of over 300 hours of work.
Overall, I think the art style chosen for Link is very cool; Link does not look photo-realistic, but instead has a glossy look like an action figure or figurine. Though I like the idea of a remaking of Ocarina of Time, I have a hard time imagining Ocarina of Time as a open world game. One of the reasons I think Ocarina of Time worked well is that it is well organized, with an interconnected world; it also allows the player to return to key locations during the child and adult timelines. If Nintendo were to created a new open world game related to Ocarina of Time, I would prefer a game that tells a new story, which might allow Nintendo to greatly expand the world seen in the original game.
What do you think of this cinematic by RwanLink? Would you like to see Ocarina of Time re-imagined in HD or as a television series or movie? Let us know in the comments below!
