Video games have seen a slow infiltration into the academic world, yet they are still ever-so-often dismissed as gluttonous, mindless, or even the cause for violent behavior in youth. Fitting video games into ludology (the academic study of games in general) has become increasingly justifiable in recent times, however, as music, stories, and memes from a variety of video games have found their way into popular culture and the modern lexicon, making their impact on the world hard to continue…

A group of Zelda fans recently created an anime-style intro for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for an animation class and posted it as the debut video on the YouTube channel Project RGB. With the distinct style that anime intros have become known for, this video is a showcase of popular characters and locations from Breath of the Wild, backed by an upbeat track from Japanese pop duo YOASOBI. A few depictions of Skyward Sword, as well as the appearance…

Did you know that The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening originally started life as a passion project by a small group of Nintendo developers — which included Director Takeshi Tezuka and Programmer Kazuaki Morita — to try and port the Super Nintendo hit A Link to the Past over to the Game Boy? As the project took shape and eventually became blessed by Nintendo’s management to be an official game, it evolved away from a straight de-make of A Link to…

Over the years, fans have noticed that one dog in particular just cannot win the race for whatever reason. I speak, of course, of the blue dog. Content creator Vidya James wanted to know if it was even possible for the lowly blue dog to win a…

The Legend of Zelda is inspiring. The series’ music compels musicians to provide their own styling to its iconic themes. Some composers stray from the familiar, creating new soundscapes that reflect much of what makes the franchise so endearing. Enrique Ponce, with his album Songs of the Goddess: A Legend of Zelda Tribute, does just that. Ponce’s music originally accompanied Patrick Sullivan’s Songs of the Goddess. Sullivan, a game designer currently working in the industry, started the work as an…
