Bombchus Are Items in Smash 4

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct revealed a surprising amount of information for the new Smash games, with no shortage of news for the Zelda fans; we’ve gotten a ton of new information on the items, the reveal of Midna as an assist trophy, and a clip of Skull Kid in action. Amidst all the excitement, we also got the entirely unexpected news that Bombchus—featured most prominently in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask—will be a new item in the game. We already mentioned that yesterday, but it’s time to delve into some more details.
In the video above, we get exclusive clips of the Bombchu used in battle (for the lazy, it’s around the 0:36 mark). It seems to function in basically the same way as it did in the original games; the item will follow a straight trail on the ground and explode on contact, climbing on walls and ceilings. The Bombchu can walk on light platforms with ease, and seems to be as powerful as a regular bomb. The clip above also shows Toon Link throwing the item, which is at least a confirmation that it won’t have to be set on the ground as it had to be in the Nintendo 64 games.
The video also gives us a little look on two more items that have already been announced, namely the Beetle from Skyward Sword (shown off at around 0:25 mark) and the Fairy Bottles (0:40). The Fairy Bottles act in a fairly obvious way; like the heart containers, they seem to just heal you upon being grabbed. No HUD was present in the footage, so we can’t see how much life the item will restore. Our first look at the Beetle confirms that it will grab players and lift them straight up into the air, maybe even far enough to take them off-screen from the looks of the video.
There’s also a ton of non-Zelda items that look amazing, like the Orb Club from Kid Icarus Uprising, and the Hocotate Bomb, which is basically the rocket from Pikmin used as a weapon of mass destruction.
Watch the whole video above to see for yourself! What do you think of the Bombchus?
