Best Buy: Skyward Sword to Release in September
Posted on June 21 2011 by Mases Hagopian
Every so often it seems websites and retailers are updating their release date for the Legend of Zelda: Skyward and the latest to do so is the folks over at Best Buy. While the official word from Nintendo is still Holiday 2011, Best Buy has dated the game for release on September 25th, 2011. Unlike most other arbitrary dates that have been set in the past, this date is actually a Sunday, which is when Nintendo releases their new products here in the states. Perhaps there is some legitimacy to this one, but it could just be a date to encourage fans to reserve the title at their store. More after the jump.
When looking at Nintendo’s lineup for this coming holiday, it seems clear that almost all the focus is going to be on the Nintendo 3DS side of things. Sure, Skyward Sword is going to get a push for the Wii, but it’s on a system that is now almost five years old and on its way out. Skyward Sword might sell quite a bit of Nintendo Wii consoles, but it is not as vital to Nintendo’s overall success as the 3DS games coming this holiday. I’m thinking that it is very likely that Nintendo might push out Skyward Sword in September or October so that they could focus their holiday push on the Nintendo 3DS.
Most the advertising that we see for Nintendo titles is probably going to be for games such as Starfox 64 3D, Super Mario 3DS, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Mario Kart 3D, which are all slated for release this year. The reason is that there isn’t a large install base for the Nintendo 3DS yet. So Nintendo, much like they are doing with Ocarina of Time 3D, is likely to heavily advertise their 3DS titles, since this will push sales of the handheld console. In turn, this will help build the install base and increase sales in the future for 3DS games.
Perhaps I’m over analyzing a Best Buy release date, but I think there could be legitimacy of Skyward Sword releasing in September or October. Let me know what you think by posting your thoughts in the comments below.
