A Zelda Game Starring Zelda?!

Wednesday the folks over at IGN posted an article discussing the Nintendo characters that seem to always get a supporting role and really should have a game starring them. Zelda was one of the characters mentioned. Obviously IGN either forgot about Wand of Gamelon or has repressed it out of their memory. Anyhow, the idea of a Legend of Zelda game starring Zelda could be interesting. IGN mentioned that a Zelda starring game could be similar to the traditional Link starring titles, but because of her Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda’s game could have even more challenging puzzles to solve!

In several of the past Zelda games the princess of legend has served a more active role than her 8-bit and 16-bit counterparts. This started with the character of Sheik in Ocarina of Time, but Wind Waker and Twilight Princess gave Zelda a crucial part the final battle sequences. Spirit Tracks even incorporated Zelda as the companion/guide character and made her playable in portions of the game. Jump on in for my thoughts.

When I first read the IGN article and came to the part about Zelda I initially thought, “That would take away the traditional elements of what make a Zelda game great.” But after thinking about it I had a couple thoughts that might make really interesting games.

Imagine a retelling of Ocarina of Time from Zelda/Sheik’s point of view. It could take place between the seven years when Link was gone. Imagine being young Zelda first donning the guise of Sheik and learning sheikah magic from Impa. It could be a stealth based game where Zelda as Sheik did her best to help the people of Hyrule in the rising darkness caused by Ganondorf’s take over.

It could also be a brand new adventure where Zelda and Link work together, but Link is the companion character instead of Zelda. I don’t really like that idea as much personally. I would be afraid it would end up being too much like the DS title Super Princess Peach. That does bring up another point, if Zelda were to star in her own game, it might be easy for the creators to make it to much of a “girly” game which could destroy the strong female character that Zelda has. On the other hand if done right, it could develop the princess into an even rounder character.
