A Link Between Worlds Topped Japanese Game Sales Its First Week

A Link Between Worlds has already been a big success in North America and Europe, and now its set to make its mark across the Pacific. The 3DS Zelda game set in the same overworld as A Link to the Past has topped sales data for its first week out in Japan after releasing there belatedly on December 26, 2013.

A Link Between Worlds sold 224,143 copies its first week in Japan, according to sales data covering December 23, 2013 to December 29, 2013, beating out the HD remaster of Final Fantasy X/X-2, which also debuted that week. A full list of the top 20 games sold in Japan can be found here. The same week, the Japanese version of the 3DS XL was the top-selling game system in Japan, selling 139,867 units for the week.
In its second week out, A Link Between Worlds held steady at the number third spot on the list, selling 73, 072 copies for a total of 297, 216 copies sold. It lost the number one and two spots to Puzzle & Dragons Z from GungHo Online Entertainment, and Pokemon X/Y, both 3DS games. Games on Nintendo’s 3D handheld have been dominating Japanese game sales for some time.
