The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds News Recap
Posted on June 12 2013 by Jackson Murphy
The first day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo is starting to wrap up, but we got a lot of news out of the event. A lot of Zelda news that is.
The mysterious Link to the Past sequel being developed for Nintendo 3DS got a full unveiling today. The game is called The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, calling back to the title of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System classic. I guess you could say there’s a Link between the titles!
Get it? A Link? Because Link is the Hero and the dictionary says tha… Fine. Look, I am writing this to recap the news. I make bad jokes, so we’ll both need to deal with it. Either way, you’re stuck with me.
Let us begin!
Our legend begins at the end of the Nintendo Direct this morning. Nintendo revealed the official E3 trailer for the Zelda title on 3DS. From the trailer we can see many elements of A Link to the Past returning for this pseudo-sequel. Fairy fountains are back and are discovered by bombing cracked cliff sides. We also see another series staple returning: pieces of heart. The stamina meter is now purple! We don’t know if that’s a certain power or an upgrade, but it’s different from the green bar that was shown when the game was originally revealed.
The final bit of news from the E3 trailer was the official title. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is the name of the 3DS entry in the series. There is also a shadow of the Triforce reflecting off a picture of the real item in the logo. Some fans are speculating that a dark-Triforce exists, but I believe it is there to symbolize Hyrule and The Dark World.
We also got a ton of new screens for A Link Between
Worlds, along with official art for the game. We get a good look at the return of classic Link in one of these images. We haven’t seen that guy since the Oracles. Seeing the return of the art style in the modern world has me excited as a fan.
Recently we found three minutes of off-screen footage. The E3 demo gives us a look outside dungeons. We get to see a guy (who probably hasn’t been following the game at all due to loud sounds implying he is surprised) explore the fields outside, and they are open for exploration, and a lot of it.
In addition, we can now infer that the item-select screen pauses the gameplay. The off-screen footage showed the man choosing an item from the touch screen. During this moment, enemies stopped moving. There is no real time item selection like Skyward Sword.
That concludes our The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds day one recap. More news is bound to show up during the week, but this is what we know now!
