Top-down perspective in 3D gaming

The Legend of Zelda

Every gamer who lived through the ’90s should remember one thing: top-down perspective (or overhead view). This pervaded many games throughout the history of video games such as Pokemon, SimCity, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, and of course the early Zelda games such as the original game and Oracle of Seasons/Ages. But how well would these games fare in 3D?

Hit the jump to find out!

Since the release of the new Fire Emblem game: Awakening we have been able to see how an overhead view would look in 3D, and it’s surprising just how well it turned out. Being able to use 3D for what it was meant for, depth, allows the player to further immerse themselves into the game. Allowing us to see the subtle differences in terrain that without 3D would not be possible.

But how well would a top-down Zelda game look in 3D?

Well, a major aspect of The Legend of Zelda is the environments that you, as the player, are placed in. Being able to tell the depth of terrain, dungeons and buildings could open an array of new puzzles and side-quests for Link to face.

They’re currently making two new Pokemon games, X and Y, specifically for the 3DS that are sure to bring new challenges and opportunities to the player.

Personally I feel another 3D Zelda game with a top-down perspective only seems logical for Nintendo. If the 3D works it should be done. Being a big fan of the Oracle games makes me want a remake of them of course. However a whole new story, a whole new top-down game acting as a draw back to the originals would really allow new players of the series to understand what playing the original game was like. Let’s face it, gamers who are new to the series today probably have not played these games that come from way back in the NES and Game Boy Color days. Which means that Nintendo could ultimately draw in more players if they introduce these old school games back to the Wii U and 3DS.

But that’s just my opinion.

Please leave your comments below and let me hear what you think about the idea of bringing these games back to life in 3D!
