Nintendo Announces GameShare for the Switch 2, Expands Multiplayer Functionality
Posted on April 02 2025 by Nicole Scott
Nintendo is building out its suite of multiplayer options for Switch 2 buyers. With the original Switch, players gaming locally would typically share one half of a Joy-Con set to game together. A new free feature for the Switch 2, GameShare, will make it easy for people to play games with a single physical or digital copy. GameShare supports local and online multiplayer on multiple machines, including compatibility between Switch and Switch 2 consoles. However, sharing games is only possible from a Switch 2.
One console can share a GameShare-compatible game with up to three others at a time. This function will seamlessly integrate with the GameChat feature for easy screen-sharing and voice chat for those pairing with multiple Switch 2 machines. In the presentation, Nintendo clarified that not all games will have this support. Some of the first games will include Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, Super Mario Odyssey, and Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain.
Additionally, games with GameShare compatibility can only be played on shared consoles while using GameShare. This is different from the upcoming update for Virtual Game Cards, which allows solo play without a constant connection to the sharer.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will release June 5th, 2025 and pre-orders begin April 9th, 2025 from participating retailers in North America.
