“An Unendorsed Anthology of My Nintendo Rewards” Offers Meticulous History of Nintendo’s Long-Running Loyalty Program

Graphic designer Oscar Bown, the person responsible for compiling An Unendorsed Anthology of Club Nintendo, follows up their previous project with a new book: An Unendorsed Anthology of My Nintendo. This digital-exclusive book is available now as a standalone .pdf, as well as part of a digital bundle of both Unendorsed Nintendo Anthologies.
Bown was kind enough to provide Zelda Dungeon with a review copy of the book, which is over 600 pages long and highlights rewards from every region in which My Nintendo is supported. On the subject of these books, he says:
“While the My Nintendo loyalty program might not quite capture the legendary charm of Club Nintendo, it’s still packed with over 1000 unique digital and physical rewards that celebrate Nintendo’s creativity.”
The book chronologically showcases every My Nintendo reward from 2016 and on, with promises of free updates every January. The book also provides information on sweepstakes for My Nintendo loyalty members, including collaborations with Cold Stone Creamery, Build-a-Bear, Box Lunch, and more. It’s clear this project was a labor of love, as finding and compiling all these rewards must have been a sizeable feat. From printables, to stickers, to lore expositions, this book has it all.
An Unendorsed Anthology of My Nintendo is a picture-centric book with brief text descriptions on every item. Each page also details the regions the items were available in and the amount of Platinum Points it cost to get them. The book took me about fourteen minutes to read thoroughly through, so it’s great for a light reading break. The graphic design is minimalistic, which I think was a good choice for this particular type of book. The design creates readability and simple navigation (particularly if you want to look up a certain year). I think it relays the information it needs to very effectively.
To be honest, I did not even know My Nintendo was a thing until about two years ago. As a result, this book made me a bit sad that I missed out on some of the really cool Nintendo rewards, such as Nintendo 64 keyrings, the Skyward Sword HD mini heart plate, and especially the Triangle Strategy pin sets that were exclusive to Europe. However, I’m glad that there’s a place to view them all now so that the cool products (and especially the lore drops) don’t get lost to time. As a Splatoon fan, I enjoyed reading the Splatoon 2 relationship chart which I had never seen before.
This project is truly a love letter to the program that created merchandise for fans of various Nintendo IPs. Through the book, I was able to appreciate the quality and creativity that goes into most of the products offered. Also, it was just plain fun to look through.
