The season of love is here, and the vibes have had me thinking about the love stories showcased in each Zelda game. I’ve been thinking of not just the love that’s shared between Link and Zelda (which I always fangirl over), but the many love stories happening in the background. When you get to know the NPCs that wander around in each game, there is a lot more tea and spiciness going around than it seems at first glance!

I love many background love stories throughout the series, but here are some of my favorites:

  • Paya’s love for Link in Breath of the Wild: Although it’s unrequited, reading Paya’s first and most wholesome experience with crushing on and loving Link is so sweet!
  • Sonia and Rauru’s beautiful love story in Tears of the Kingdom: Although we see these two interact in cutscenes, the real dynamics between the two of them are unveiled when you take photos of and translate the Zonai Tablets. It’s revealed that they were extremely devoted to each other and often engaged in witty, playful banter.
  • Medli and Prince Komali in The Wind Waker: Although at the beginning of the Dragon Roost Island quest, Komali is bitter and unkind because he can’t grow his wings and become a full-fledged adult, during the second visit when Medli is awakened as a Sage, it’s revealed the Komali and Medli care deeply about each other. I was always hopeful that, after Medli was no longer needed as the Sage of Earth, she was able to reunite with him!
  • Perda and Wabbin, the beautiful Gerudo goddess and the nerdy, little Hylian: I loved how Link was Wabbin’s wingman at the Lover’s Pond in Breath of the Wild. And it made me smile when it was revealed that Wabbin and Perda got married and had a child together in Tears of the Kingdom!
  • Groose’s love for Zelda in Skyward Sword: Although this was also unrequited, I love how Groose’s feelings for Zelda develop from jealousy toward Link, to love and devotion for both of his friends throughout his character arc.
  • Ralph’s love for Nayru, the Oracle of Ages: Ralph is a tender, little character who goes to the ends of the earth to rescue Nayru. His motivations to rescue her almost end up bringing about his own demise when it’s revealed that he is a descendent of Queen Ambi and he is desperate enough to kill her.
  • Ravio and Hilda’s connection: At first glance, Ravio and Hilda in A Link Between Worlds seem to act only as servant and ruler. But after closer inspection, and after reading Ravio’s diary, I always imagined that there was a budding romance between the two of them — and if not that, at least a deep, platonic love.
  • And, of course, we can’t forget the greatest love story of all time, Anju and Kafei in Majora’s Mask: Link’s interference in this couple’s life is so breathtakingly beautiful. Not only do you have to devote an entire three-day cycle to help them reunite, but even after that, these two are content to meet the end of the world, just knowing that they are together again. *sobs*

Of course, there are many other side love stories throughout the series! What ones are your favorites? Do you second any of the stories mentioned above? Let us know in the comments below!
