Spoiler Warning: The comments on this article may contain spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Zelda’s role has grown dramatically over the course of the Zelda franchise. Originally a damsel in distress for the hero to save, she’s shifted to becoming a more active character in the games. She (as Sheik) helped Link in Ocarina of Time, she held Calamity Ganon at bay in Breath of the Wild, and now she finally has an official starring role in Echoes of Wisdom. She’s moved from the one being saved to the one doing the saving.

Zelda fans will doubtlessly continue to discuss Echoes of Wisdom for some time. Not only does it feature Zelda as a playable character, Echoes is the first franchise entry after the Era of the Wild. Its gameplay is a sizable departure from the hack-and-slash, use-items-to-solve-puzzles standard we’ve come to expect.

Let’s take a moment to think about what Echoes could mean for the titular princess’ place in Zelda’s future. Given that we’re talking about a video game series, there are bound to be more Zelda games. Could Zelda have a dual-starring role with Link in the next 3D title? Would she have echoes or an echo-like ability at her disposal? Would she be as stoic and silent as she was in her debut playable role?

The only announced Zelda project currently in production is the Wes Ball-directed feature film. How might the movie incorporate parts of Zelda’s character and abilities from Echoes? I’d like to see her use automatons. The steampunk creations would translate well to the silver screen (they’d also be a great way for the film to lean into the tech-savviness of the open air games’ Zelda).

We want to know your thoughts! How should Echoes of Wisdom’s Zelda inform future takes on the princess? Or, would you rather she not? Tell us all about it down in the comments.
