Before the Switch, I would have said comparing 2D and 3D Zelda games was like comparing apples and oranges. But Nintendo no longer has a designated  “handheld” console, which was one of the biggest barriers between them. With technology advancing and games becoming bigger than ever, Zelda games of both varieties are evolving. Echoes of Wisdom and the Wild games seem to complement one another; both play around with sandbox mechanics and metamorphose the conventions of older titles. While they still have their differences, I feel myself drawn to the idea of comparing Echoes of Wisdom and Tears of the Kingdom as the most recent entries in the Zelda series.

I love both games, but I have to opine that Echoes of Wisdom is the superior title. While I have enjoyed my time with the Wild games, I really miss the formula of past 3D Zeldas. Even though Echoes of Wisdom is a lot more open than its predecessors, it has given me a dose of the old-school linear progression I crave. I was immediately invested in the story and got to jump in right away.

Tears of the Kingdom is too open for me — too big. 70 hours into the game, I’m barely halfway through the story content, and that has sort of ruined the immersion for me.  I will give Tears of the Kingdom the edge for game design, simply because the mechanical feats pulled off by the team were incredible. I also think Tears of the Kingdom‘s puzzles are just a little bit tighter, but I am still having a delightful time in the dungeons of Echoes of Wisdom. Also, thank goodness for the return of companion characters!

Of course, it really comes down to a matter of taste. What do you think? Do you prefer Echoes of Wisdom or Tears of the Kingdom? Let us know in the comments!
