The Zelda Dungeon YouTube team is back with an exciting Echoes of Wisdom video! In this new episode, Gooey, McKenna, and Corey share their early impressions of the new Zelda game. For the next few videos, the YouTube team will be discussing different sections of Echoes of Wisdom. While it is a more open-ended game than many previous top-down Zelda games, the main quest have some discernible or distinguishable sections from which the crew can organize videos and discussions. In this video, Gooey, McKenna, and Corey’s discuss their thoughts about the beginning of the game through the first dungeon.

The crew opens the video by discussing how Echoes of Wisdom is different from Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch. While both games use the same engine, Echoes of Wisdom has made some notable adjustments or additions to the gameplay. Echoes of Wisdom gives the player a full range of motion rather than the eight-directional movement that Link’s Awakening featured. The player also has the ability to move the camera in certain directions to extended the player’s view for brief windows; the crew utilizes this camera feature often. Finally, Echoes of Wisdom includes a dedicated jump button, a feature that was locked behind an item in previous top-down Zelda games.

In discussing the echo mechanic, Corey notes that the old bed is one of the most useful echoes in the game, and the fact it is given very early in the game is an interesting choice by the developers. When discussing combat, Gooey compared the early combat in Echoes of Wisdom to combat systems in real time strategy game (RTS), where a player must assess an enemy’s strengths and weaknesses and choose the right unit to combat their enemy. McKenna points out the incredible variety of echoes available in the game. She also compares the combat encounters to the combat systems in Pokémon games; the players sends their chosen Pokémon out to fight other Pokémon rather than engaging them directly.
