When we play games, especially The Legend of Zelda, we often go in expecting to be the hero. Hyrule was meant to be saved, so why wouldn’t we be saving it? It seems though that mod developer BigSharkZ has a different idea. After creating a randomized evil campaign and recreating Ocarina of Time within Legend of the Zelda: The Wind Waker, BSZ this time has turned to a more… sinister inspiration. Presented as The Legend of Goose: The Honk Waker, this new mod puts you in control of a goose — specifically, the Goose from Untitled Goose Game known for terrorizing the hapless residents of a small countryside community. It seems one small town was not enough for the Goose though, and now it’s set its eyes on all of the Great Sea.

Now, one might be impressed enough to simply see the Goose as a full model replacing Link, which was the original state of this mod. However, over the course of several months, BSZ has in fact crafted an entire campaign surrounding this concept. Alterations include new abilities, a custom UI, an entirely new plot about the Hero of Honks, custom dialogue, custom enemy models, and even plenty of whole new areas including what look like nods to Skyward Sword, Super Mario 64, Link’s Awakening, and even the Gamecube BIOS menu.

The mod’s 20-minute trailer alone is a work of art that had me in stitches several times throughout its runtime. Something about the King of Red Lions looking like he’s on vacation in the Bahamas just really gets me. As one can come to expect if they’re familiar with mods made by BSZ, there is an incredible amount of creativity and ingenuity on display in his work. Re-purposing Carlov as the creator of all the anti-goose signposts and having Medli ride atop the Goose instead of carrying it are just a few of the amazing ways BSZ really makes these mods flow seamlessly with the world around them. It is always incredible to see what he gets up to in creating these wacky ideas.
