Daily Debate: Will Link Finally Have a Voice as a Non-Playable Character in Echoes of Wisdom?
Posted on July 05 2024 by Nick Miller
Link has always been a silent character. Breath of the Wild, being the first mainline Zelda game with proper voice acting, described his silence as a result of his stoicism. In other games, the more practical explanation was for the sake of player immersion. The silent protagonist made it feel like the characters in the game were speaking to the player directly. Even if Link was speaking, his dialogue was muted so that the player could fill in their own words or thoughts.
With Echoes of Wisdom coming this September, we will be witnessing a major change for the Zelda franchise, and possibly in more ways than one. The biggest change, of course, will be Princess Zelda taking on a playable role. This also means that Link will be taking on the role of a non-playable character, which opens up the door for Link to have extensive written dialogue for the first time ever!
In the announcement trailer, Link and Zelda are shown together at the battle with Ganondorf that seemingly triggers the events of the game; and we all know we will see them together again by the game’s conclusion. This means that if any conversation happens between the two of them, at least one of them will have dialogue. With Zelda taking on a role who’s speech is traditionally muted to the player, this will leave Link to carry out the conversation.
So, what do you think? Will Link finally have a voice in Echoes of Wisdom? What kind of tone should he have? Do you think he should speak at all? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
