Ocarina of Time, a beloved and popular game in the Legend of Zelda series, has been around for 25 years. Revolutionary at its release, the Nintendo 64 classic brought the series into the 3D world and left its mark on the gaming landscape with its impressive design and gameplay. Its legacy on the series and on video games in general cannot be denied. Many fans have clamored for an updated remake of the game with modern graphics. While Nintendo hasn’t answered the call (yet), Curiomatic has!

Curiomatic is “a collective of creative minds dedicated to exploring the creative aspects of games, from art, design, music, and the creative process as a whole.” They put together a beautiful render of Ocarina of Time‘s Link standing in the Temple of Time. Their video opens with a sweeping glance at the animated character model from multiple angles and close-ups. Long-time fans of the series will smile at the familiar toe-taps Link does as part of his idle animation. The model stays true to the original style while making Link look almost realistic.

The render and animation is gorgeous in and of itself, but the video holds more than that. The team gives a retrospective on Ocarina of Time‘s influence on the design of the Zelda series. Then, they discuss their design philosophy and how they examined a lot of the original source material, such as the instruction book and player’s guide, to decide how to bring the new render to life. The next section explores the essence of Link’s design, including what artwork influenced Link’s neutral expression, the angle and length of his ears, and which modern games influenced the look of his hair. The care and thought that went into every decision shines through in Link’s design and animation.

I would love to play an Ocarina of Time remake with this level of attention to detail. Until Nintendo decides to work on a remake, I can get by with what this team is doing.

What do you think? Would you like to see a remake made with this level of detail? Do you think Nintendo would do something like this? Let us know in the comments!
