Daily Debate: If Tears of the Kingdom Ends Up Being “More of the Same”, Would That Be a Bad Thing?

Nintendo recently gifted us with a ten-minute-plus presentation of the legendary Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma playing Tears of the Kingdom. In the gameplay we were able to better understand, even if superficially, the new abilities that Link will have access to in his new adventure through Hyrule, which has now been expanded with islands suspended in the sky. The trailer arrives just over a month before the game’s release, and as with Breath of the Wild, it’s clear that Nintendo is revealing as little information as possible, while at the same time trying to reassure fans thirsty for more news.
One of the first questions that came up in the community after the presentation was: Tears of the Kingdom feels like it follows the mold of sequels like Super Mario Galaxy 2. What does that mean? According to reviews from some fans of the series, the game seems to confuse itself with its predecessor. Even after showcasing new mechanics like weapon fusion and the ability to rewind the trajectory of certain objects, the trailer shook social media and discussion forums with mixed opinions about the extent to which such innovations would be enough to make the already impressive and giant open world of Hyrule feel fresh and new again. Maybe people expected a more “impactful” trailer to be revealed, and some went so far as to say that the new title resembles more a DLC than a completely new entry in the universe of The Legend of Zelda. Now that’s a hot take. Personally, I believe it’s way too early to draw such drastic conclusions like that. And even if that’s the case, Breath of the Wild still is one of the most acclaimed titles in the franchise.
So, if Tears of the Kingdom presents a lot of similarities to its predecessor, would it be such a bad thing to just improve and add to an already very well received formula? What is your opinion on that? Do you think this is indeed a possibility, or does Nintendo want to surprise fans and is just holding back as much information as possible until the game launches in May?
