The Legend of Zelda timeline has been a debate amongst fans for a long time. Everyone has their own theories as to where each game belongs. The release of Skyward Sword is only weeks away and fans are eager to place it in their own timelines. We have been told on multiple occasions by Nintendo, Miyamoto, and Aonuma that Skyward Sword is the first game in the series, and who are we to argue with them? However, the folks over at Nerd Mentality are coming up with their own theory for where the newest installment in the Zelda series might belong and it starts by revisiting an older title.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is considered by many as the worst game in the series due to the controls and difficulty in gameplay. So, it’s surprising to find out that the story actually gives us important information. In Zelda II, players learn about the actual legend of Princess Zelda. At the start of the game, Link discovers a strange mark on his left hand that we all know to be the Triforce. Concerned, Link goes to see Princess Zelda’s nursemaid, Impa. Upon seeing the mark, Impa leads Link to a secret room in the castle where a girl, who appears to be sleeping, is revealed. Link is told that she is the original Princess Zelda and is then told this story.

“Link, the time has come when I must tell you the legend of Zelda handed down in Hyrule.

It is said that long ago, when Hyrule was one country, a great ruler maintained the peace in Hyrule using the Triforce. However, the king too was a child of man and he died. Then, the prince of the kingdom should have become king and inherited everything, but he could inherit the Triforce only in part. The Prince searched everywhere for the missing parts, but could not find them. Then, a magician close to the king brought him some unexpected news. Before he died, the king had said something about the Triforce to only the younger sister of the prince, Princess Zelda. The prince immediately questioned the princess, but she wouldn’t tell him anything. After the prince, the magician threatened to put the princess into an eternal sleep if she did not talk, but even still, she said nothing.”

“In his anger, the magician tried to cast a spell on the princess. The surprised prince tried to stop him, but the magician fought off the prince and went on chanting the spell. Then, when the spell was finally cast, Princess Zelda fell on that spot and entered a sleep from which she might never awake. At the same time, the magician also fell down and breathed his last. In his grief, the prince placed the princess in this room. He hoped that someday she would come back to life. So that this tragedy would never be forgotten, he ordered every female child born into the royal household should be given the name Zelda.”

This is the true legend of Zelda. For Skyward Sword to be the first game in the series we would had to have seen events mentioned in the tale somewhere in all the previews. So far, we have not. Maybe Skyward Sword is the first in the series so far, but Nerd Mentality thinks we can expect a prequel.

Of course, like many Zelda fans before me, I have speculated the order of the timeline. I’ve spent countless hours researching games and listening to other people’s theories. It’s sad to think that we might never know what the true timeline is. What do you think of Nerd Mentality’s theory? Do you think we will eventually see a prequel to Skyward Sword? How many of you have your own timeline theories? Do you think Nintendo will ever release the official timeline? Let us know in the comments!
