Daily Debate: Which Version of Ganon is the Scariest?
Posted on February 21 2022 by Chakell Herbert
I don’t know about you, but I am absolutely stoked to see Ganondorf return in Breath of the Wild 2 this year! I’ve always been one who is drawn more to the cunning human version of our Gerudo king than to his beastly form, so I can’t wait to see what is in store for his character. To me, there is something much more sinister when he is in his human form instead of a mindless monster. We’ve seen countless versions of this iconic Zelda villain, and each is terrifying in his own right. However, there is one version who still strikes fear and unease into my soul no matter how old I am.
The mastermind in Ocarina of Time.
This version of Ganondorf is the original of his human forms, and to me, he is easily the winner when it comes to most terrifying. From his cunning plans to take over Hyrule, to his sinister magic, to his fantastic organ-playing skills (on which he plays his own theme song), this Ganondorf is perfection when it comes to intimidating villainy. I never get tired of Link’s encounters with him throughout the adventure in Ocarina of Time. You feel much more worthy of the Triforce of Courage when you watch how he literally haunts Link’s nightmares as a child, until after 7 years, Link grows enough as a hero to finally take on the King of Evil and defeat him.
So satisfying.
Which Ganondorf do you think is the scariest of the Zelda series? Let me know in the comments!
Chakell (pronounced shuh-kell) is an associate editor for Zelda Dungeon! She has loved The Legend of Zelda series since she was a little girl because of its equal mix of princesses, besting bad guys, and heartfelt stories. Chakell lives in the overall tame state of Utah, but holds onto her childhood hopes to find an adventure in her backyard one day. She has a degree in English and is a full-time editor for a magazine. You can usually find her gaming (obviously), laughing with her husband, taking a long time to tell stories because she keeps getting distracted; getting sucked into books and podcasts; or snuggling her cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
