As Breath of the Wild demonstrated, one of the best parts of any Zelda game is the simple act of exploring the world. Some games like the original The Legend of Zelda simply drop you in and allow you to explore everything, limited only by your knowledge and skill. Other times there will be a short opening sequence with limited ability to explore before completing something, such as the Great Deku Tree dungeon of Ocarina of Time

No matter when these overworlds become available to the player or how big they are compared to other games, the Zelda series always makes things memorable. My personal favorite overworld to explore would be Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule, because no matter how many times I revisit that particular iteration, it still feels like I discover something new every time. I also enjoy The Wind Waker’s Great Sea. Many people found the sailing to be boring and time-consuming, which ultimately lead to the creation of the Swift Sail item in The Wind Waker HD, but I always loved setting a direction for the wind and just letting the in-game days fly by as I sailed from one end of the map to the other, watching the weather change and discovering new islands along the way.

What about you? What’s your favorite overworld to explore in the Zelda series, and why? Let us know in the comments below!
