Two years ago, I would have told you I was looking forward to using the Wii U GamePad while playing Breath of the Wild. Inventory management and map usage are very convenient that way, as evidenced by The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. The E3 2016 demo of Breath of the Wild did not utilize the GamePad this way. Instead, it was used to show the control scheme. Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said GamePad features were dropped due to the fact that it “breaks the immersion”, but I think it’s safe to say there’s another reason why. Breath of the Wild is coming to Nintendo Switch, which is not a two-screen experience.

The Commonwealth Realm team have put together a video in their “Inside Breath of the Wild series detailing the Wii U controls for the game, and how different they are from past Zelda controls. They also touch on how these controls may be affected by the Nintendo Switch, and talk about gyro aiming. Gyro aiming has been present in the HD remasters mentioned earlier, so it’s safe to assume Breath of the Wild will incorporate it on the Switch as well. Let us know what you think of the video in the comments below.
