Majora’s Mask and its eponymous face covering has always been one of the more mysterious artifacts in Zelda lore. As it debuted in one of the shorter games in the main series, its powers and past aren’t quite fully explored other than what we can gleam from the residents of Termina and Skull Kid/Majora themselves. Perhaps because of this, our thoughts naturally gravitate towards wonderment of what might just happen when others don the mask.

So what do we know about it? Without question, it is a relic of extreme power, as according to the Hyrule Encyclopedia, it was able to take Skull Kid’s memories, desires, and loneliness to create an entire alternate reality. It also has the power to transport others into this realm as well as empower whomever is wearing it. Its strength is such that it could pull an entire moon out of space onto Termina itself, though this could be debated since the reality in which it does so is under the mask’s direct purview. Perhaps even more insidious is its ability to subconsciously (and directly) influence the wearer to do things they would not normally do, such as make Skull Kid’s usually harmless pranks into deadly and malevolent actions. In the case of Skull Kid, his normal innocence and playful nature was transformed into a sadistic and wrathful personality. Last but not least, the mask appears to be sentient, though whether this was caused by the ancient hexing rituals it was supposedly used in is still a mystery.

So what would happen if Zelda or Ganondorf were to wear the mask? Both of these figures are much more willful and powerful in nature than Skull Kid. Would Zelda be able to resist the mask’s corruptive influence? Would she be able to use its power for good? What about Ganondorf? Already a corrupt and evil figure, would he be able to dominate the mask’s powerful persona and utilize its abilities in conjunction with the Triforce of Power? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
