The Sheikah Slate sports a lot of cool features in Breath of the Wild, but one thing that I didn’t take advantage of was the Camera Rune. Not only did I have no interest in filling out the Hyrule Compendium with the animals and enemies, I didn’t even take selfies or scenery shots. With as much adventure and exploration as Breath of the Wild has to offer, I was surprised at how uninterested I was in the Camera Rune. The fact that there weren’t very many incentives or rewards to taking pictures outside of the plot-driven memory locations was a real shame, especially since The Wind Waker utilized its Pictograph far more effectively with the Nintendo Gallery figurine collection and sidequests that resulted in Pieces of Hearts.

Playing other games inspired by modern technology — such as Kingdom Hearts III with its adorable selfie mode and plethora of Lucky Emblems and Photo Missions to photograph for solid rewards — reminded me of how much Breath of the Wild‘s photo options and utilization was lacking. Getting any kind of reward for taking photographs would have been nice, but I would have loved to see it go even one step further. Maybe getting pictures with the optimal lighting or dynamic camera angle, a la Pokemon Snap, could increase the chance of getting rare materials, ingredients, or even weapons as a reward. I’m just saying, there are so many video games that have implemented a camera feature that are addictive, fun, and give the players incentive to want to take pictures. What do you think, did you enjoy Breath of the Wild‘s Camera Rune, or wish there was more to it? Let us know in the comments!
