10 Fun Majora’s Mask Glitches

The following article is part of our archives and does not reflect current style guide standards. It is kept as is for posterity.

All Zelda games have their own glitches, but I find the ones in Majora’s Mask to be particularly interesting. Some are impossibly difficult to pull off, so I’ve wracked my pea-brain to provide this list of my ten favorite glitches and/or secrets from Majora’s Mask. Here, I will guide you through some of the more accessible exploitable bugs in the game, ranging from playing as the beloved Fierce Deity outside of boss arenas to the curious Wrong Warps that speedrunners so commonly use to complete Majora’s Mask in unbelievable times. These few glitches are enough to warrant playing MM again, whether it be on the Nintendo 64, GameCube or the Wii Virtual Console. Below is a collection of my favorite glitches, most of which are completely safe to use. That means minimal game crashes and more hilarious fun. Enjoy.

1. Fourth Day

Link can actually play during the fourth day of Majora’s Mask, the day of celebration once he saved Termina from its destruction. This takes incredible timing, so it must be noted that performing the Fourth Day Glitch will take lots of patience and perhaps multiple tries. On the third day, when only 00:00:02 or less time exists before the menacing moon crashes into the land, look through the telescope in the Astral Observatory in the Bombers’ Hideout.

Dance with the Scarecrow in the observatory to fast forward time. Doing so again will truly initiate the glitch. The game will allow you to play as Link during the “Dawn of a New Day”. Beware though – like all fun glitches, talking to some characters and entering certain buildings will cause the game to freeze. Proceed with caution.

2. Rapid-Fire Sword

What if Link could slay enemies with the sword equivalent of a machine gun? You can now see for yourself. Pull out any sword, any sword at all, and find an object to interact with using the A button. This can literally be anything, and it’s best done in an area where there are lots of enemies to kill.

Crouch before this object, and stab your sword at the object and then quickly press A to interact with said object in the middle of the stab. This will cause a thin white line to trail lightly behind the sword. Now when you approach any metallic objects, wood, or enemies, the sword (although it looks still) will attack multiple times per second in rapid succession. Plus, if you sheathe your sword and run around, the glitch still works as if your sword was unsheathed. To unsheathe your sword without undoing the glitch, do a backflip and press B while in midair. You cannot jump off platforms while using the infinite sword glitch. I guess Link’s afraid of heights.

3. Fierce Deity Glitch

This glitch takes some practice to pull off, but when you have it down, Link will be able to use the Fierce Deity Mask outside of boss arenas. I’m lying, you say? No, this is legit. The most important component of executing the glitch is having a pool of water nearby. The ideal choice is the small pool of water in the western section of Termina Field somewhere before the entrance to Great Bay Coast.

Go to a spot in the water where Zora Link can stand, but regular Link floats. Once you’ve pinpointed a location where this works, dive in the water as Link using the B button for GameCube. Once Link is submerged, quickly equip the Zora Mask. If done correctly, then the slot for the B button should read “Dive” instead of “Punch”.

The most difficult part of the glitch’s execution is as follows: simultaneously press the B button and the button where the Zora Mask is applied to over and over until the B button goes blank. Zora Link will now be floating, and you can now press the A button to swim in the direction of land. Remember to only swim in the direction of land. If Zora Link rolls onto land, then you’re fortunate enough to have the glitch work. If Zora Link just swims in the same spot eternally, then you’re a failure. Start over.

Now with Zora Link standing up, you can equip the Fierce Deity Mask. You may think that being Fierce Deity Link is some sort of power fantasy, but the Double Helix Sword is roughly as powerful as the Great Fairy Sword. Additionally, the beams that Link can project onto bosses as the Fierce Deity do absolutely zero damage to enemies. Too bad…

4. Swordless Fierce Deity

Oh hells yes, there’s more. Go to a spot in Termina Field where there is destructible grass and ChuChus. Stand in front of the ChuChu holding up your sword as a shield with the R button. As it attacks, quickly press A to grab a nearby plant while still holding R. Congratulations, you will have no sword, and if you hold R, Fierce Deity Link will look as if he is holding an invisible shield. Since the sword doubles as a shield for Fierce Deity Link, you can literally block enemies by holding up an invisible sword. It’s pretty cool, but this one will definitely take a few attempts to do correctly.

5. Invisible Great Fairy Sword

This is perhaps the easiest glitch to perform. Take out the Great Fairy Sword and walk up to a mailbox. Yes, pick your favorite mailbox and when it asks you for your delivery, give it your Great Fairy Sword. Afterwords, your sword will become totally invisible. Keep in mind that you can combine this glitch with the Rapid-Fire Sword glitch.

Simply make the sword invisible by feeding the mailbox (which happens to be an interactive object), then stab a nearby object. What object could you possibly stab? Nothing comes to mind. Anywho, you will have an invisible, infinitely attacking Great Fairy Sword. Alternatively, you could perform the Rapid-Fire Sword glitch on the Great Fairy Sword and then sheathe the sword for a similar effect, but this way is much more tedious and literally makes the sword invisible.

6. That Mysterious Blue Fog

If you’re afraid of Majora’s Mask, then don’t do this. If you’re scared of the dark, don’t do this. But if you’re a fan of blue fog that can be partially dissipated by spin attacks, then this is the glitch for you. When in the water as Zora Link, use your protective Zora shield and then take off the mask without letting go of the R button. Termina should now be covered in a mysterious blue fog.

7. Hookshot Bow

Completing this glitch will effectively make Link hold the Hookshot as if it were the Bow. First off, take out your hookshot. Simply hold Z to squat down and press R to shield. Now the Hookshot should always be aimed at the ground. This may seem like a lame glitch, but if you press Z, Link will sometimes hold the Hookshot as if it is the Bow.

8. The Great Escape

Have you ever wanted to escape Clock Town as a lowly Deku Shrub? Quit your crying, little boys and girls, because the answer is simple: go to the East Entrance of Clock Town and have your back face the guard. Z-target and move backwards towards the guard. If you go to the left or right corner, you can actually squeeze right past him into Termina Field.

Seeing through walls is very normal, and always persist even when you don’t think you’ll make it. If one corner is taking too long, try the other one. After Deku Link has inched his way past the guard, he will find himself in a Termina Field without any music and an empty map. This just makes Majora’s Mask all the more creepy…

9. Wrong Warp

The concept of “Wrong Warp” is used by speedrunners of Majora’s Mask to complete the game in as little time as possible. This is a very popular exploit that is used by the legendary MrGrunz in his YouTube TAS videos. Majora’s Mask essentially consists of several fragmented locations, which will load when the player enters the vicinity of an area. Speedrunners have found a way to use bombs to travel in the air and enters these so-called Wrong Warps. Doing so will make Link hover from one distinct map to another by finding the entrance to the second map and exiting through empty game space into the next map.

Since I’m not nearly awesome enough to perform this glitch, if you’re a speedrunner who wants to get ahead of the game or just have a lot of free time on yours hands, check out the Wrong Warp page on ZeldaSpeedRuns.com.

10. Great Bay Temple Up Close

A commonly shared secret among fans of Majora’s Mask is getting to Great Bay Temple without riding the turtle. The looming temple in the distance is actually rather underwhelming when seen up close, and here’s how to do it: stock up on arrows and magic. Lots of arrows and magic can be found in the Zora Cape. I also recommend that anyone who attempts this is either using Chateau Romani for infinite magic, or has a double magic meter.

Please note that one can only do this if Great Bay Temple has already been cleared and the ice arrows have been obtained. Simply shoot ice arrows into the freezing water to create platforms. As you jump from one platform to another, shoot more ice arrows to create a path. To decrease the chance of drowning in the ice water, you can use Deku Link to skip on top of the water. This, however, is optional and depends on whether you think you need that extra layer of safety padding. If you fall into the freezing water, I’m afraid you’ll have to start from the beginning. In the end, the effort is worth it because you can now approach Great Bay Temple from very close – but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Great Bay Temple is of dainty stature and is probably only three times as large as Link himself.
