Majora’s Mask 3D Any% Speedrun World Record Broken Twice in One Day

After only a few months since release, Majora’s Mask 3D is already being smashed by speedrunners. For the last month or so, the goal of MM3D speedrunners was to finish the game in less than an hour and 50 minutes. This week marks the completion of this goal, as well as new world records from two different runners. Today saw runner gymnast86 break the record with a time of 1 hour and 47 minutes; shortly after, runner iwabi broke that record with a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes, and 19 seconds.
On April 13th, Japanese speedrunner iwabi claimed the Majora’s Mask 3D Any% world record by defeating the final boss after only 1 hour, 47 minutes, and 45 seconds. This new record marked the first speedrun under 1 hour and 50 minutes and set a new bar for MM3D runners. Yesterday American runner gymnast86 (zeldafreak943 on YouTube) bested iwabi’s time by eight seconds, but the achievement was short-lived. Within a few hours, iwabi retook the world record with a new time of 1 hour, 46 minutes, and 19 seconds.

MM3D Any% route involves collecting a series of necessary items throughout Termina by sequence breaking into late areas early. For example, runners entered both Snowhead and

Considering how close these times are and how fast these records have been broken lately, I see the race to 1 hour and 40 minutes heating up very soon. In fact, both runners have expressed their confidence in shaving quite a few seconds off their times. Who knows, maybe the Majora’s Mask 3D speedrun record will reach the 1 hour and 27 minute time of the original Majora’s Mask.
This is a friendly reminder that speedrunning, especially in an Any% category, allows for glitches and exploits. Remember, all gamers enjoy games differently. Please be considerate in the comments.
What do you think of the records? Are you excited to see Majora’s Mask 3D get broken even more? Let us know!
