Daily Debate: What Sort of Online Play Should Hyrule Warriors Have?
Posted on August 02 2014 by Tyler Meehan
Hyrule Warriors has been seeing a ton of coverage in the past few days—no surprise, given that we are quickly approaching the game’s release in Japan. One aspect that has come up recently, though, is the subject of online gameplay for the title. We heard yesterday that online play of some sort might happen, with many suspecting it would be a cooperative mode; that idea was shot down this morning. But it does make you wonder…what sort of online gameplay could the game have?
I’m a bit stumped, honestly, as online co-op was the one idea I figured would fit in well with the game. A straightforward competitive mode could work, certainly, with two players mimicking the two sides of a normal level of the game, pitting their armies against one another. Thing is, while that might work well for an RTS or something where you can control all your forces with ease…you don’t do that in Hyrule Warriors. You control a single character, and your army functions off AI. A “conquer the map” style multiplayer would just be two players running around and trying to take control of areas either a) from mindless AI units that can be easily defeated, thus allowing you and your opponent to take and retake areas with such ease that achieving victory is more tedious than fun, or b) from your opponent directly, in which case you might as well just have a one-on-one fighter instead of a Warriors setting.
But yeah, enough of my rambling. An online competitive mode is still viable; perhaps you could both receive different objectives, and the first to complete theirs wins the match, as Nate suggested earlier today. There could be any number of other ideas, maybe utilizing completely different gameplay styles from the main game. I dunno; I’ve never played a Dynasty Warriors game, so I have no idea what to expect in terms of a online multiplayer mode. What do you guys hope to get in online play with this game?
