Freedom of speech applies to everyone or no one. You can't have it part way. If someone wants their say they have to accept that someone with different views to them also has the right to have their say. Moderators steping in ahead of time telling people what they can and can not say goes against this simple freedom of speech.

This is not saying rules can't exist. The idea is to have the rules, allow everyone (of every differing view points) to have their say and afterwards you deal with the rule breakers and the unacceptable speech.

Don't prevent people from having their say.
Do hold people to account for what they way.
There is no such thing as freedom of speech here. It's a private forum.

It's the job of a moderator to tell people what they can and cannot say; that's essentially what they're here for. Preemptively reminding the collective participants of a thread not to violate the rules when they're in danger of doing so doesn't in any way favor one group over another or prevent people from having their say, at least not any more than punishing them for breaking those rules, so I'm not sure what the objection is.
