For me, no. Though one time I was mobile (so no adblock for me), and I decided to go on ZD Normal (I usually use ZD Brown). It was flooded with ads, but I didn't have any new tabs forcefully opened.
My advice is to get Ad Block, or browse with a different, ad-free skin.

It happens with random ads sometimes. You more than likely accidentally clicked a word that linked to an ad.

I have adblock and ZD brown is fugly. No offense to those who like it.
Get Adblock+; it's very much worth the time and removes any adware on the page. Additionally, if there happens to be an annoying image then you can right-click on it and choose to block it from the dropdown menu. AB+ is available by download for Internet Explorer and Firefox[?], but comes as an extension for Google Chrome, and works consistently and efficiently. Not to mention, it's free. ;J
