While I'm definitely a fan of wild speculation, there is actual evidence. If not outright proof that Sheikah and Hylians are at least at times considered human in Zelda canon. Also, there's more proof that the Maku Tree from Oracle of Ages mates with humans than there is for Zora doing the same...
That's a possibility, you have to imagine that animator's and designers for TotK grew up consuming some of the same media we did. It's funny because I was just talking to my wife about it today when she mentioned that Link's "tattoos" were cool (and were about to show up on nerd bodies...

To add to the conversation, the Kokiri also have pointed ears (Hylians have pointed ears to better hear the goddess) but seem to be quite different from "Hylians". Twili and
also have big ears though but I wouldn't guess they would be considered Hylians...
Was he referred to as human before TP? Nearly all the denizens of Hyrule in TP were round-eared.
Edit: looks like the Minish also called him a human in MC. I never noticed that before now.
I think so, my head canon is that Hylians are more elven but the Gerudo definitely do interbreed with them. I just mean that when TP released, I was annoyed that they referred to Link as a human instead of a Hylian but that was also around the same time I think they made the final switch from...
