Keep an eye on your health bar and dismount from your Skell if it gets too low. It's better to restart from a checkpoint than it is to lose your Skell and have to reimburse it (those three insurances can go by before you know it). And yes, you can play as Celica later on. The affinity quest...

Save your game, return to the title screen, and then select a squad again. The video above explains it better than I can.
