    Default Casting Spells?

Ok... I feel REALLY dumb asking this but I'm gonna go ahead anyway I guess
So I've looked throught the ZD guides and walkthroughs and everything and I can't seem to find it (probly because it's so simple they didn't see the need in including it) But my problem is, I can't figure out how to cast your magic spells! I just started playing the game and got the shield spell, and I can't figure out how to actually use it.

Press "start" to bring up the spell selection screen, move the cursor over the one you want to use and resume the game. Then press "select" to activate the spell. Well, this is how it's done in the GBA port, but I don't think it's any different.

I think that's how its done on all ports of the game. However, if this is on Virtual Console, then press "+," move the cursor to whichever spell, resume game, and then press "-" to use the spell.
