Okay so this is a question I've been pondering for a while now: which current gen home console is best? There are three options to choose from. First the Wii by Nintendo. Then the PS3 by Sony. Then the Xbox 360 by Microsoft. I'll list the advanages and disadvantages of all three.
Wii
The Wii's first advantage is the price. It's approximatly 250$ brand new and comes with a demo of a game.
Then there is it's expansive virtual console (currently over 300 titles), Wiiware (original wii only software), and channel apps.
The motion and pointing controls make things so much more fun than just pressing buttons.
The games are cheaper than the other home consoles, are generally E-T rated with the exception of only a few games, and are generally entertaining.
You get notices from Nintendo on things like new software and such.
It has backwards compatibility for Gamecube games.
It has free wi-fi.
The disadvantage is that it's generally rare and hard to find.
PS3
Advantage: Includes a virtual console to download PS1 games Disadvantage: but that's all for a virtual console.
Disadvantage: Most disc games are just crap that looks like heaven. With a rare gem here and there.
Disadvantage: No backwards compatibility for PS2 games.
Advantage: It's a blu ray DVD player but really who'd buy a PS3 just for that? Definately not me.
Advantage: It plays music but again who'd buy one just for that?
Advantage: Free wi-fi and games compatible with it.
Disadvantage: around 500$ to buy.
Disadvantage: Games cost a lot by themselves.
Xbox 360
Disadvantage: Costs money to use wi-fi.
Disadvantage: Mostly a library of games that look good but are otherwise crap.
Disadvantage: Little backwards compatibility
Advantage: Plays DvDs.
Disadvantage: Costs almost 1000$
Disadvantage: Games coost a lot to buy.
So basically my vote goes to the wii cuz it's da bomb. Also if I left out features then please tell me and I'll edit them into this post.

Wii win (bad pun is bad). So yeah. Xbox 360 I would say is better than PS3 because what does Xbox 360 have more of than PS3 does and wants? Hmm...Music? No Microsoft doesn't have that... downloadable content? Yes, but I'm reaching for one of the more important parts of a console...hm...a bigger Library of good games. Yeah, that's why X360 is better. Not to mention two of the downloadable games that I think came out for XBL are Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. Oh, and Altered Beast. Well, all I have to say is, Wii rule (bad pun again), XB360 is okay but not as good, PS3 is hardly even a console anymore.

They all have good games, and let's face it, most of the games on all of the the consoles are just terrible. I prefer the good ones on the Wii, and I think that they are easier to tell from the bad, and Virtual Console is awesome.

Wii has the best games but Xbox 360 has the best gameplay, graphics and features. So it's a tie between them.
But with PS3... Waste of Money!

PS3 and 360 have good realism, but that's it. I'm *really* sick of realism. "Look at that! Doesn't it look so much like the real world! I love looking at the real world while playing a game, no point in looking outside!" No creativity.

I don't buy games because of realism (although I do prefer but it doesn't matter), I buy them because of gameplay. Both PS3 and PSP have none. It's all about how mature their games are because it's shooting and it's classified MA (15+). But that's all they got.

Yeah, a bit sick of unnecessary violence. It should be allowed, sure. But video games are art, and just putting in something so that it looks "cooler" makes a game worse for me.

It is just a rip-off and if you want a console that is like PS3, just buy and Xbox 360. It is as great as the PS3 in features, plus, it has decent games.

So the 360 supposedly has the best gameplay? What the flip?! The Wii is obviously the best in terms of gameplay. You actually point at the screen for things like projectile aiming and motion controls. Compare that to mere button pressing and you get: ~Wii will Wii will kill you!~ Seriously that's how bad the 360 gameplay is compared to the Wii. Not to say it's bad but still it's crappy compared to the Wii. And the PS3 is a waste of money. It's being killed by the PS2.

I'm starting to realize that the PS3 does seem to have been pumped more than it's worth. After a month of having it, I've purchased only two games. I played them nonstop for about two weeks, and they slowly got old. The PS3 is now sitting on the floor by my bed, not plugged in, and has been collecting dust for two weeks. I guess I'll have to wait until Final Fantasy 13 to get truly interested in that overhyped computer-like console. I swear, it does everything my computer already does, but worse. Why even waste money on those types of add ons?
My Wii is currently plugged in, and it's been holding the Metroid Prime Trilogy for a good month now. I'm playing it to death, even though I've owned the Wii since early 2007.
So yeah, guess which one I like best.

I'm not saying Wii doesn't have gameplay, they do. So does the Xbox 360. They are about the same.

Well, that's subjective. I find too much of the same thing with the 360, some first person shooter that looks cool. Where the Wii has so much variety... and what's the word... Miyamoto! Also Virtual Console. The other systems can try as hard as they want, but they simply can't get what the Wii has there, mainly because they don't have access to NES/SNES/64 (with some exceptions, Rare should be with Nintendo where they belong).

Heh, if I had the money I'd buy a PS3 without thinking about it. It's annoying how all three consoles have their own exclusive games. I bought my Wii for Nintendo games, of course. So far I'm loving Brawl, Galaxy and Prime. My 360 was bought since, err, well I really wanted another console. It has served me well, and has some great exclusives like Vesperia and Gears of War.
For a while now I've been itching to get a PS3 too. Just to play some of the exclusives like Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone and Little Big Planet. Why oh why must the good games all be on different platforms? :P

I think I would tend to be a bit more bias towards the Wii mainly because I have owned each and every Nintendo console system since the NES. I've grown up with the Nintendo brand and I will always go back to it.
Other than that though, I think the Wii wins for content. Yes, there's a lot of shovelware minigame titles out there that are horrid but as a person who's not into first-person shooters and likes retro gaming the Wii is fantastic. I love the sheer number of titles available on the virtual console for download. The prices are great it turns the Wii into an all-in-one system.
The exclusive titles of Mario, Zelda and Metroid are a no-brainer as well. It's just disappointing that it can only max out at 480p when I've got a widescreen TV capable of true 1080p.
As for Xbox vs PS3, I recently bought my first non Nintendo console and made it the PS3. The main reason for buying a seond, non-Nintendo console was to play Batman Arkham Asylum (I'm a huge Batman fan) but the main decisions for the PS3 over the 360 were:
- Free online gaming. I don't do a lot of it, so an Xbox online membership would have been a dumb thing for me to spend money on
- No red ring of death. If I'm investing a few hundred dollars in a gaming system, I shouldn't have to fear it crashing on me from day one out of the box. I know it doesn't happen to all systems, and it's getting better, but I know someone who's on their 6th system now. That's just unacceptable.
- As mentioned, I'm not a 1st person shooter fan. I don't care for Halo or Gears of War and the like. PS2 offered me Uncharted, Infamous and Little Big Planet. I'm more excited for them. And as far as exclusives go, Batman offered me Joker playable challenge levels. Bonus!
So, even though it's not as capable, I would say the Wii wins in my books. I can't say that's it's not without it's flaws, but it's got the most titles that interest me on it.

I'm almost tempted to buy an Xbox 360 (though I can't remember what swung it for me xD).
I think I have to say Wii, because it's the only one I own, and it's the only one I can get my favourite titles on...a lot of my favourite games are seriously Nintendo-created ones.
Added to that, I believe the Wii is cheaper to buy and the games are cheaper. Then there's the free online gaming, and there's some good things popping up on Virtual Console or the WiiWare shop. I can't say I'm bothered about backwards compatibility due to the fact that I still regularly use my GameCube, but eh. xD; It's a nice thought, especially if people sold their GameCubes to buy a Wii.
I like the controllers. I've always preferred Nintendo's controllers. I honestly cannot grasp how to use PlayStation or Xbox controllers, and never have. xD;

I love the N64 controller, so cool. The GC was pretty good too, but I don't like the XBox or Playstation one, and I'm annoyed that they never change it, kind of reflective of quite a lot of the games that they have actually.

Yeah Nintendo changes the layout of it's controllers just about every time it makes a new console. But Sony and Microsoft never change it.
Then there's the fact that because of their philosophy of graphics that make everything, the only true gem they'd create is by accident. Nintendo pwns Sony and Microsoft. While Nintendo doesn't put as much graphical power into their systems there are still plenty of Nintendo games which the graphics blow me away. The graphics in TP just blew my mind. I also liked WW for it's colorfulness. Cell Shaded graphics at it's finest in Nintendo there. And that was last generation. I could ramble on for hours but really there's just no point in saying Nintendo has good graphics but not as good as Microsoft or Sony.
Nintendo uses the factors that actually make games good like gameplay, story, and the overall feel. Sony and Microsoft just make sure the graphics are good.

Although I think that Nintendo actually has more variety in graphics, Microsoft and Sony just overuse realism. I thought that LBP was a nice change to this though.

Wii is much more worth your money and you get most stuff free, and there's much more variety with games instead of just all the 1st person shooters Xbox 360 has with barely any other type of games. Also if you have Xbox 360 or PS3 you won't be able to play games from the most awesome series ever like Mario Bros. Metriod, and Zelda. I only have a wii right know but I almost want to get a 360 just so all the FPS addicts don't stare at me like i'm crazy when I say I don't have any Call of Duty, Halo or any other of those FPS's that people only play today

The Wii is probably the best because it is a great family system. It is also very self-explanatory.

I like the wii since you can actually play with your family. It does not cost as much as the PS3 and the Xbox360 do.

I think in terms of gaming library, Xbox 360 is the best, as it has many titles of which are huge hits. The Wii has way too many casual style games that really bloat the amount of titles for it, and the PlayStation has hardly had any exclusive hits to speak of. Performance wise, PlayStation 3 comes out on top, as it's just the superior in power, with great graphic quality and speed, and even the ability to play Blu Ray. I once hated it due to it being extremely over-priced, but with it down to $300 now, it certainly has gained my respect. As always, Nintendo rules in gaming qaulity, with games such as Mario Galaxy being some of the greatest. So I guess it depends on your preference, but a solid gaming library has always been the most important thing to me when deciding a good console, so I went with Xbox 360.

Steve, I'd argue that the Wii library is amazing. You know how to avoid 3rd Party family games. But with the Wii you have first of all Virtual Console, that's just amazing, I was born in 1993 and I can now easily access Super Mario Bros. 3 and like 100 other great titles. Then we move onto Mario (2 greats), Zelda (1 out that was officially a port and one new game coming out), Metroid (the entire Prime series for 1 game), Brawl and some amazing other titles from everywhere, some great 3rd party games, and of course WiiWare, if anyone wants to here my praise for Defend Your Castle and how underated it is PM me.

I would buy the wii without thinking a second time!
Reasons:
1. I'm brazilian, and here in Brazil, videogames costs the eyes of your face (nowadays, JUST the PS3 is about R$1200 around here), so being a cheap console is a lifesaver.
2. I never had a GameCube, so that adds a lot of games to play.
3. The other two consoles have lots of good games too, but most of them roll around a genre that I'm already tired of playing: shooting.
4. No "Ring of Death" (I know a lot of people that had this problem :()
5. Using the wii mote is awesome!
Worst Wii's disadvantage:
Absolutely NO good RPGs!
(there's hope this will change soon)

I'm a little skeptical about the potential of the other system's innovation. It lacks Miyamoto, and I haven't seen much indication that it will be another form of controller like with the Wii rather than just "ooh, it moves". I could be wrong though.
