Obtaining the Boomerang in Link's Awakening

In Link's Awakening, you have to go through the trade process to find the Magnifying Lens, and once you have it, you can see the guy who found the Boomerang. He offers to trade it for your B-Button Item.
Question is... which item should I give him? The only thing he seems to want is the shovel, but I don't want to give that to him until I have all the Secret Seashells. Any tips or advice?

I always gave him the shovel, which was an item that I really never used.

I believe the only thing you can swap with him is the Shovel. I haven't played the game in years, but I know the boomerang is an optional item - it isn't needed to complete the game. Why not get all of the hidden seashells (use an online guide) and then swap for the boomerang for the rest of the game?

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I know the boomerang is optional but I like having a full arsenal so I have as many tools at my disposal as possible. And yeah, I was considering getting all the secret seashells and then giving him the shovel, so that's what I'll do.
