So who has played/beaten the second quest? Did you guys find it more annoying or more challenging? A worthy addition or just an attempt to give the game more replay value?

Personally, I have played the second quest sparingly but I have yet to beat it. I haven't progressed to the point where it has gotten extremely annoying, but definately more challenging. Some of those hidden/oneway walls are just tedious if you ask me. If you were playing the game back in the 80's without the world of the internet, it would be quite challenging and the best way to get anything accomplished would be to map out the whole dungeon on loose paper.

I think a second quest did give the game some unneeded depth. The game was already quite long to begin with for the NES, so a second quest was like, woah, there is still more. However, I do think the first quest could have stood on its own. Personally, I would have preferred a slightly longer/harder first quest rather than the addition of a second quest, but that is just me.

I agree, I would have rather had a longer first quest with better additions, than have a second quest. I can think of a few things that were a bit un-needed that could have been replaced. How about.. the magic book, the power bracelet, and the red candle? with the candle, the magic book serves no purpose really. The magic blast actually does more damage than the fire itself. Just give link the ability to push rocks without using a bracelet. And make the blue candle stand on its own, and act as the red candle does, using it more than once in a screen. Use arrows as arrows, not rupees as arrows. Perhaps a larger overworld, and more underworld shop and things. Make the max rupees 999 or something (Even though I think that was impossible on NES), and one thing that always made me mad was when you went around through the first quest, got 100% everything, went to Ganon's castle, got the silver arrows and red ring, killed Ganon, and you were forced to start a new quest and lose everything. I mean, at least in Zelda 2 you kept all of your spells and levels, and at least in the Wind Waker you were given the option to start the 2nd quest. I mean, the only way to have a 100% file is to not kill Ganon, or to kill him but turn the game off.

Personally, I've beaten the 2nd quest four times, and I'm actually beating it again today. The first time I beat the second quest, along with the first, I had no guide. I had a Nintendo Power that showed where the heart containers were, and where to find the second quest dungeons. I honestly would have given up trying to find the 8th dungeon. But all of the dungeons, I mapped out myself the first time around. After that I just used a guide. The guide I'm using now is terrible! I'm using the collectors edition players guide for LoZ, and it's really unfair. I really think they just put this piece of junk together in a few minutes. They show bombable walls on regular doorways, they tell you to walk through walls that should be bombed, and they even make doorways that aren't even in the game. I'm really better off just figuring it out myself than following that guide.

I thought the walk-through walls were unnessecary though. I remember constantly running out of bombs while trying to find hollow walls in the later dungeons and having to go back outside and get more. I personally would have liked it if they didn't reuse the dungeon rooms so many times. They all look the same, but different colored dungeons. I would have liked if there was a clearer map screen for both overworld and underworld, and I would have liked if there was some type of equip screen, better than the normal one.

But I loved LoZ for what it was, 2nd quest and all. If I could change it, I would - But I'm not any less happy playing it the way the programmers intended.

Heh, long posts >.<

Yeah, I've played AND beaten Second Quest. I had a little bit of trouble my first time through second quest, because I was so used to where everything was in the first quest. But overall, I think second quest was more fun.

Some of the dungeons in the game were just in the weirdest and obscure places. Many were just in the most random of areas. Placing bombs on water to blow up a hole in the mountain to find the 8th dungeon? Randomly burning down trees or blowing up holes in the wall to find others? These were great for the shops, potion shops, door repairs, secret rupee locations, gambling game, and heart containers, but for actually being a part of the actual quest, it took away from the game I think.

Most of the second quest was simply finding the dungeons, let alone beating them. However, I'm sure if you were patient enough at the time to actually search every last place in Hyrule to find the dungeons, you were probably skilled enough to be able to beat them.

Well yea, weird places in 2nd quest...but actually the dungeons rest in huge underworld, so it kinda makes sense it theres very hidden and random openings. But I actually enjoyed the second questjust as much or even more than the 1st...I persoanlly have beaten it on 'dozens' of occasions. But huh alder dragon, you have to remember, this game was made in freakin 1986...And huh, if you wish to play a cleaner version of LoZ, play The Legend of Zelda BS (its the third quest) and was only available via download on the snes using the bs addon (now available in ROM format on a snes emu). Its still official and everything including the sprites and equip screen are re-rendered in a much higher quality.

I've played and beaten it twice.

Nice little addition and secret for those who want an extra challenge.
