Did anybody ever really use this item much at all?
While I thought it was quite cool when I first got it, I don't think I ever really used this item. I almost always had the magic boomerang equipped rather than this item. Although once you get the Magic Book and it creates fire it does become more usefull. Personally, I just used it at that point as a replacement for the red candle.
To me at least, it seems like a very overlooked item. The actual magic beams didn't cause nearly as much damage as the Magical Sword, which I always had at the time I got the Magic Wand. Although at one point I never knew of the Magical Sword's existance when I first started playing LoZ. Although I still didn't use the wand much.
Did you guys really use this much when playing LoZ?

You got a point. It's good for the dark rooms, but it's a weak weapon, so I never used it THAT much. Actually I used the candle and magic wand randomly for the dark rooms. :D

I use it for enemies that can be knocked back like the goriyas sometimes. I don't use it too much though, because it's a lot weaker than the magic sword which I have by then, but I will attack enemies at a distance if I don't have full hearts.

I used it ALL the time in the 3 heart challenge. It's a lifesaver. It is as strong as the white sword when you hit an enemy directly with it. The magic beam it shoots doesn't effect enemies well, and the flame just stands in the way when you want to use it as a sword in the 3 heart challenge. Personally I always liked the idea of the item, but it was a bit unnessecary. I think if the beam was stronger, I would have used it much more.

I used it all the time!
It was about as powerful as the White Sword, and it had a long distance.

I think if this was the first or second dungeons item, it would be a lot more useful. Getting it so late in the game made it almost obsolete because of the Magical Sword.
The idea of an item called a Magic Wand in the first place just doesn't fit Zelda. I know I've argued they needed to bring Magic back into the Zelda series in the past, but this name makes me immediately think of Clowns or Magicians, and that isn't the type of magic I'd want.
Should call it, the Magic Rod, or Rod of Magic. Sounds more Zelda-ish. If only it was found earliar in the game and maybe a bit stronger, then would it be worthy.

I actually loved using this, well only when you got the magic book. But huh, seeing as this is the first Zelda Mases...who can really say whats not Zeldaish with it, since well everything is. But huh...Magic Wand might have been a mistranslation...close up on the sprite shows that its more of a staff or rod than a wand...but who knows.

lol, good point.
The Magic Wand actually came back in ALttP in a way-- in the form of the Ice Rod and Fire Rod. Those two rods are know the Ice Arrows and Fire Arrows now...

Ah, forgot about that one.
If Nintendo ever does decide to bring back magic...I'm sure the Magic Wand/Rod will make a comeback.
I use it just for fun all the time...
But I mostly use it for lighting torches and seeing my way in those pitch dark rooms.
I use it sometimes on bad guys just to make the game harder.

Bump.
You're thinking of the latern from ALttP. The candle and magic wand w/magic book only temporariliy created fire, never lit torches.
Perosnally I loved to use the Magic Rod (wand) in LoZ. Was good to use on weaker enemies if your hearts werent full to enable the beamblade.

I was just randomly searching through the Zelda online world and I cam across the Magic Rod in Link's Awakening.
Link's Awakening is the Zelda game that I've given the least play time of them all and I don't remember this item at all. I've did some reading up online from the few sources that actually had information on the game and it seems it does nearly the same thing as the Magic Wand w/ Magic Book. As in it shoots a beam of fire out that can defeat enemies or light torches. It is also able to melt ice, which is something that wasn't in the original Legend of Zelda.
Seems it is more of a replica of the Fire Rod from A Link to the Past but just had the 'magic rod' name rather than 'fire rod'. Yet I'm comparing 'magic rod' to 'magic wand'. I'm unaware of all the original Japanese names but stuff like this seems to always just be a bit... off.
It seems for the most part, of the main attacking weapons in Legend of Zelda, (Bombs, Arrows, Boomerang), the Magic Wand was the most neglected in future Zelda titles. Those 3 became stables that have been in just about every single Zelda title while the Magic Wand has never appeared in an identical form, but rather just in various varieties.

The magic rod in LA is the firerod from ALTTP. They brought it back but unfortunately jipped us cuz it's the level 8 prize and you only get to use it for like 5 mins of the actual game.

only to light dark rooms once I've acquired the bible from dungeon 8. It's way to weak in the later dungeons and strangely doesn't damage wizzrobes even though the same beam damages them in AoL:?

The 'beam' used in AoL was the Fire Spell, not a rod...Link used his sword. And I believe the magic book/wand is just an early version of the Fire Rod, it pretty much has the same effect. But this idea has been rehashed through the games, but as each game is released, each idea is watered down to the point the fire rod concept no longer exists...
LoZ - Magic Wand
AoL - Fire Spell
ALttP - Fire Rod
LA - Magic Rod
OoT - Dins Fire/Fire Arrows
MM - Fire Arrows
Oracles - Ember Seeds/Seed shooter
TWW - Fire Arrows
TMC - Flame Lantern
TP - Lantern only...
PH - Nothing.

A beamblade doesnt count there guy, it isnt a Fire Rod of any kind. Its Links beamblade..you know the same one used in LoZ, AoL, AlttP, LA, MM, etc etc etc. Its a technique, not an item or spell of any kind whatsoever. And the spinoffs are not part of the main series.

If we are referring to the beam that the Magic Wang shoots out, then I think it does resemble the beam attack from Phantom Hourglass. It actually does look similar as it is in its beam motion.
However, if it is about the fire, then I suppose the flaming sword is all that really came along with Phantom Hourglass.
If Link were to be able to combine the two spirits and use them both simultaneously... (A beam of fire), now that would be sweet and that could resemble something close to a magic wand / fire rod.

I doubt it, that didn't shoot out a beam like the magic wand and it didn't have anything to do with fire. The only relationship is that it is a projectile. It's not even a weapon.
Rod of any kind. Its Links beamblade..you know the same one used in LoZ, AoL, AlttP, LA, MM, etc etc etc. MM has the beamblade? I've never noticed this.

In LoZ when you get stunned I feel that the wand is a useful item. And also for keese and Likelikes etc. To light rooms once you have the book is also good. I actually prefer using wand more than the light. But thatīs only my opinion!! (and without the book I hardly used it at all, which I interpret was your main question)
And also one more thing. The magical boomerang, I normally skip getting it. But maybe I should get it and use it more often. (But I do not like it that much)

I used this magic wand with the magic book to light up a dark room and to attack the Like-like like a long-range weapon. Once the fiery beam hit the Like-like, the fire will keep away and burning the Like-like.
