This is an absolute must watch for any Zelda fan. In all honesty, if you were growing up in the 80's, would this commercial really get you to want to buy the game? Given there was no internet back then, all you had to go by when buying a game was Nintendo's newsletter or Nintendo Power. Unless of course one of your friends bought the game before.

Was Nintendo going for something with portraying two kids, (one a nerd, and the other who looks like a 'normal guy' from the 80's). Were they trying to send the message out that, Nintendo ISN'T JUST for Nerds. Cool kids can play too. I wasn't old enough at all to remember ever seeing any NES commercials, but if I was, I think seeing this game at the time would send me running to my parents to get the game for me. Just for the corny song if not for the actual game. :)

I wasn't around in the 80's, so I wouldn't know how things were back then, but this commerical probably would've gotten my attention. Maybe it's just the song. :P
Perhaps by having the nerd and the "normal guy" on there, they were trying to appeal to a wide variety of audiences, kind of like they're doing today. Same old Nintendo.

I saw this commercial on the internet, about 3 years ago. I was speechless.

I think if I was growing up in the 80's and I saw this commercial, I'd definately get the game. Only because most of the NES games back then were for younger kids. No real adventure games. I think they should have had emphasis on the Save feature as well.

I love how the nerd keeps adjusting his glasses. Terribly awesome, lol.

It's like, they were advertising it that NERDS play Nintendo. Nowadays the general public might still classify the gaming world as 'nerdy', but it is nowhere like this was. They would never advertise with a 'nerd'. I think that alone makes this commercial simply awesome.

Proud to be a Nerd.

Proud to be a Nerd.
Amen.

Some people nowadays consider the gaming world to be for the nerdy generation, but there are some exceptions. Like in my school, some of the cool kids are gamers.

Did some searching and I came across a second commercial for the original Legend of Zelda.

This one is...... bad. This creepy guy is just running around yelling 'Zelda' and then acting scared of all the different overworld enemies. Weird commercial.

Personally, I love the first one a lot more than this one.

And yes, Nerds ftw :)

Agreed, that second commercial probably would've turned me away. Annoying commercials have a tendency to do that.:D

I hate it. I think a musical commercial promoting a videogame shows nothing, lol - I'd rather see actual game-play.

Ganon in the end is just hilarious. So poorly animated that it is just brilliant. Lol.

I love when the Zelda theme music kicks in and then Link does one of the 3 medallion spell thingies, forgot which one it is where he thrusts his sword into the ground.

The dancing in general is just so corny. A bad corny I might add. The original LoZ commercial in this thread was a good type of corny while the LTTP one was a bad type of corny. Seeing Link sway from side to side is just brutal.

Overall it's got way too much of a japanese aspect to it. I mean, sure the game was made in japan first, and this is a japanese commerical, but I don't think it's good to portray Link and Zelda as japanese characters. Link looks like a girl too, through most of the commercial.

Most commercials in the eighties were crazy weird like that.

That was one of the most terrible commercials I've ever seen. lol
This is what happens when you implement Japanese rap into a Zelda game. :)

The second commerical was awful!
Back then, it may have been considered "in".
Now, they would ask if
1. You have played too much Zelda.
2. Ask how much estacy you have done while playing Zelda...

I couldn't see the video because it said it was removed, but from the preview image, I'm assuming it's the old American NES one?

Yeah, I posted that on my website a few weeks back along with a few other Zelda commercials. It was the first time I had seen it and it cracked me up. But then again, bad raps crack me up almost always. XD

I'm not sure whether or not it would actually convince me to buy the game... it probably would catch my interest though. XD

I actually like the Japanese commercial better than the ones for the original Zelda title. The Japanese one has actual people dressed up, and Ganon at the end just makes me smile. The American ones are just stupid. The first one has a couple of nerds trying to rap, which makes me embarassed for them. The second one has some psyke patient apparently going into massive withdrawals from his Zelda game.

Agreed, the US commercials are weird... especially the MM commercial.

But I liked the US WW commercial. Ever seen it?

(And for the record, several of the Japanese commercials are friggin' weird too.)

Yeah, I have seen most of the Zelda commercials. To me, once they got out of the 80's scene, they were ok. Some were awesome, some were alright. And no, I don't dislike the 80's, actually it is my favorite time of many things (movies, music, games), but Vanilla Ice sucks and those two dorks just made gaming look like, well, it was for dorks who love Vanilla Ice. Of course, this was the general idea of gaming back then apparently, but they didn't have to exploit it.

Yeah, gaming wasn't considered "cool" until recently. Even now it's not extremely mainstream.

Anyways, I liked the American WW commercial. It was pretty and mysterious. ^_^

[Edited the original post and updated the video so it displays properly]

You know what's rather strange about this commercial looking at 1986 and now 2009. In this commercial there is the nerd, who is shown adjusting his glasses, and it's clearly portraying gamers as nerds. Even though the other kid perhaps is supposed to be an 80's 'cool kid', the nerd is still there.

Nowadays, Nintendo has abandoned advertising for the nerd gamers, or even the modern hardcore gamers... but instead they are trying to reach out to parents, grandparents, women, girls, kids, casual gamers, etc... Pretty much everybody EXCEPT those that this original commercial was intended for.

Quite strange what 20+ years can do to a company.

The second commercial was so bad, it was actually funny. The first one was pretty good.

Here is another one I found. Ganon doesn't evn look real. Link looks like Link from ALttP. Here it is. I don't know why they are doing funky dances.

:eek:That...is creepy. The dance is kinda cool, yet why? Why must they have dance? Then again, those are adverts you rarely see, only during the Super Bowl. I'm just gonna leave it as "Words can't describe this...>.>"

Is that a good thing, a bad thing, or is it a just plain wierd thing?
